You probably won't see this since I didn't get back on until today, but what I liked about Star Trek was how hopeful it was and that it didn't get mired down in all of the same things that we have to deal with all the time. I liked the escapism (and yes, Trek has always taught us social lessons, but in a "we've moved past this because we realized how stupid it is" kind of way) and DS9 felt so much like watching real life that it depressed me.
