But all of them are pretty much useless romantic interests. If you had used One Piece or Soul Eater or even Double Arts, you could have a point...

Rukia, Sakura, Winry and Katara... Useless Love Intrests.

AHAHAHAHAHAHA, you have got to be kidding. Or watched the series they're in while chanting "LALALALALA, I AIN'T LISTENING".

It's not like Rukia, Sakura, Winry or Katara are actually relevant to the plot of their respective stories. Hell, Rukia, Sakura and Winry haven't been featured in their manga for months now.

Rukia not being in Bleach for a while now doesn't mean anything because neither has Ichigo.... and he's the main character!

Sakura was in a chapter a few weeks ago though, IIRC.

Rukia I can definitely agree with (seriously, she spent almost the entire first half of Bleach-- at least 180+ chapters-- being absolutely helpless) and I don't know about Sakura b/c Naruto registers a -1000 on my Who-Gives-A-Shitometer, but Winry at least managed to be capable and realistic in her own way regardless of the fact that her love interest didn't give a shit about her, and WTH are you talking about re: Katara?

Katara was never built up just as Aang's love interest-- Hell, a lot of Book 1 was spent developing her as a strong, intelligent young woman who wouldn't take crap from backwards anti-feminist thinking, who protected and supported the people around her. She's believable as well as being strong, and the show treats her as such.

Wait, wait, wait. Haruno Sakura is a useless love interest?! Okay, so she starts off as a typical pre-teen to teenage girl who has a crush on the hot, talented guy and ignores/shuns the main character who does have a crush on her. I'll grant you that the Sakura from the start of the series is not a strong female role model.

However, she experiences a LOT of growth and development as a character as the series goes on, from the minor (cutting her hair off so she can continue fighting instead of just giving up) to the major (learning useful skills and becoming a powerful ninja in her own right). She doesn't back down and she gets much more mature as the series goes on. So just dismissing her as a useless romantic interest just because she has a crush on one character or because the main character thinks she's hot is pretty insulting.

I tend to think of both Rukia and Sakura as fairly well-developed, interesting characters that get rather shafted by the storyline - Rukia via kidnapping and Sakura as - well, you read Naruto long enough and you start to notice that not only is the cast at least 5 or 6 to one in the male to female ratio, the chicks tend not to fare too well in the fight scenes compared to the guys. And when most of the manga is fight scenes... there's a problem. I'm so not caught up, though, so who knows, maybe I'm full of crap. She seems pretty irrelevant to the storyline at large, though, considering she's supposed to be one of the central three...

I agree that One Piece and Soul Eater kick ass over Naruto or Bleach in that respect, though. Seriously, Maka is the shit. ♥

Seconded. I'm kind of shocked that someone could claim they're "strong female characters" when all of them are defined by romantic interests. Clearly missed the point there.

Winry was lugging around Ed's automail and WAITING for him. Sakura, for the first couple hundred episodes, was PINING for Sasuke. Rukia has no strength of character at all in the first hundred-or-so episodes, just rolls over and plays dead when they come to arrest her. These are not strong, independent women--they're PATHETIC.
