101 Rod Serling pointed the way to television that was both high quality and entertaining. Everyone is still trying to come up to the bar he set, and only a few have accomplishe it. (And I agree, his delivery was amazing.)

104 In order to get a fandom, you need something that in some way appeals to fangirls, who are mostly 16-22, or older women who consume media as though they were 16-22. So good call on Sweringen not being hot enough. Bullock was, except fangirls are afraid of facial hair and most secondary sexual characteristics.

107 My pal Theo has a theory that all movie universes are actually part of the same gigantic universe, and therefore every character played by one actor is the same peron. So we arrived at the "Iron Man has fucked Spider Man" thing about ten minutes after the casting for Iron Man was announced. Welcome to the train!

112 Looking at the credits of the girls vs. the credits of the boys is almost as depressing as looking at the credits of Keira Knightley vs. Parminder Nagra (hey, ER again!) and just as telling about how much narrower the path is for actresses in Hollywood than for actors.

117 I agree. I've never found Mick hot, for one thing. But it's fanboys who determine rock band pecking orders, and rockist fanboys care about the blues more than soul.

Surely there are exceptions to this. Aren't comic book fandoms, for instance, usually dominated by young men?

But comic book fandom usually revolves around super heroes. Girl fandoms and boy fandoms are both wish fulfillment. Just different types. Not a lot of wish fulfillment in Deadwood, excellent show though it is.

The OP mentioned fangirls specifically. But since most of the "woe no fandom" secrets ar looking for fic, they're looking for fangirls, as girls write most of the fic. Boys do other things with their fannishness. I always get the sense that LJ fandom is like a safe space for the fangirls who like more male-oriented canons, but that's definitely a generalization. I was mostly trying to say, it's the teens and college girls who are the mass in fandom. They might not do most of the work, but they do the squeeing and they review fic and decide what is popular and what isn't, that sort of thing.

Ah, I see. Well, I'd certainly agree with that.

I am a woman and I really loved Deadwood and many of the characters, but I feel not inspired to write fic about it, because I could never keep up with the language of the show. The dialogue was so awesome, it's hard to reach in a fic.
