170. You SURE? Because to me, there are female characters that may not punch or kick their way in, but otheerwise are pretty strong.

Read better canons.

Please read/watch some Slayers, Rurouni Kenshin, Bleach, Heat Guy J, Eureka 7, Princess Tutu, One Piece, Soul Eater, Avatar: The Last Airbender... Please, read the Prydain Chronicles. Please read the AKIRA manga. Please read the Basara manga. Please play the Devil May Cry series, or any of the Prince of Persia games (I recommend Sands of Time, and the new next gen game in particular).

Strong female characters are NOT rare. If you are not finding them, you are not looking.

What are you interested in? Because I can guarantee there are strong women in those genres that you are disregarding.

See my below message, though some of those may have those aspects -- I'm not too big into Sci-Fi though.

She just went from Princess Tutu to AKIRA to Avatar to Devil May Cry. I'm not gonna twist your arm into watching any of them (though I do recommend Avatar pretty hard) but I've rarely seen so varied a list.

Utena Tenjou, Mai Tokiha, Natsuki Kuga, Ahiru, Faye Valentine, Ed, the Boss, Para-Medic, Fortune, Sniper Wolf, Olga Gurlukovich, Yuna, Lulu, Rikku, Fran, Ashe, Penelo, Anissina, Hermione Granger, Luna Lovegood, Jenny freaking Humphrey, Eowyn, Ridley Scott...

None of these women are perfect (oh! Mary Poppins), and none of them are superheroes (oops! Wonder Woman, Hawkgirl, Mary Jane Watson, Karolina, Gert, Kate), and I've probably missed a bunch. But that's just from the things I've been playing/reading/watching over the last week or so.

And dude! I KNOW you like Kyou Kara Maou. I know it's really male-heavy, but Miko-chan!

Perhaps I should have clarified, but I said that based on the (admittedly limited) genres I like (Mystery/Detective/Psychological, Superheroes, and some Romance). I also limited it to comics/anime/manga (cause I rarely watch television and movies), I also didn't include book characters (which includes a lot of kickass female detectives).

In short, my bad for talking out my ass based on my limited exposure to strong female characters. *slinks away in shame*

Have you ever seen Veronica Mars? That show combines four of the five things you've mentioned fairly well, though the jury's still out about Wallace's Alter-Ego.

Agreed, and even Mouri Ran counts in my book (shoot the DC anime is filled with strong female characters). It's just a lot of time in the limited genres I like, either the strong female characters are killed off or character-butchered (*looks at DC Comics*) or there aren't many of them there (or they're always made to be the Damsel in Distress even if they're supposed to be a strong character). I'm also thinking my definition of "strong" isn't the same as everyone else's. >_>;;

Renee Montoya? :-) Gotham Central is awesome, and her arc in 52 was wonderful.

Okay, if you read comics, I hope you're familiar with Birds of Prey. Manhunter is a great series about a complicated and strong woman--although it's sadly being cancelled *again*. Also, Greg Rucka's run on Wonder Woman, Ed Brubaker's run on Catwoman...
