Haha, guess it's true everyone has their skeletons in the closet, eh? i think it's just because S.H. is a bit... of a weird thing to fic full stop for me. I mean i do know that the fact it's a hundred odd years old doesn't *actually* change anything, but it just makes it all the more embarrassing to admit to I guess!

Yeah, I know what you mean. I've been reading the stories, slowly, for several years, but I only recently (i.e. this month) wrote my first fic in the fandom. It's kind of an odd thing to write, but I can't put my finger on why! It does make me wonder, though, if there were any fanfiction-writing Victorian fangirls/boys.

I think it's 'cause it's so popular and old and sort of 'sacred' and important in culture, almost. to do fandom-y things (which are sort of seen as weird even when they aren't) is... hard, heh.

haha, i always maintain S.H. was like the proto-fandom. Think about it. the fans, when he 'died', wore mourning bands; just like what a lot of fandom-ers do today, celebrating birthdays and the like of characters. they popularised the term canon for such things (outside the bible), 'fanfiction' for S.H. has always been very popular (see: pastiches) and 'The Game' is a good example of being dedicated. so in conclusion, I bet there totally were fangirls/boys then!

And, of course, the fans famously petitioned Conan Doyle to bring Holmes back after his 'death' in the Final Problem. I think you may be onto something there, since the exact same thing happened with Carson Beckett in the SGA fandom, and there are probably other examples out there somewhere.

What's 'The Game'? I haven't got through all the canon yet, so I don't really know anything about the pastiches.

oh god, it even spawned the never ending fan petition to bring something back! i love those. they're always so pointless. And there really are a lot of them. only ours WORKED, haha!

'The Game' is where you pretend the canon is real and ACD was a 'literary agent' for Watson, and basically try and construct real/plausible timelines and bloodlines and the like for them all. it's quite fun, though I'm not very into it myself.

The petition worked in SGA! Not as effectively, though. Hm, I think I'll have to make a 'vintage fandom' Holmes icon, since it had a Victorian fandom.

The Game does sound fun. I'll have to look into that!
