Which musical do you wish had a filmed version?

(Anonymous) 2020-07-27 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Can be in general or a specific cast.

I really want Jekyll and Hyde with someone other than David Hassellhoff in the lead.

The Lion King so I can watch it again without bursting into tears every time I hear the Circle of Life. :/

Also, Starlight Express because I think it would be the ultimate party watch musical.

I would love a film version of the musical version of Lion King, with the extra songs (mosty Shadowland, Endless Night, and Grassland Chant really, but the others too). But either animated or with (black) humans dressed as lions the way it is in the musical. Not that "realistic" CGI crap of the "live action" Disney version that I still watch because I adore Lion King in all its forms but was a major dissapoointment and downgrade from all the other versions.

Oh, seconding Starlight Express! Only, hopefully with the costumes and roller-skates instead of eldritch abomination train-human CGI a la Cats!

Phantom of the Opera, but with a cast who can actually sing?

I saw this live at 13 and would take the cast I saw filmed. Except... that was 24 years ago so they might be too old now, lol.

And directed by Guillermo del Toro, not inexplicably set during the Commune, with a better costume designer (I'd say just keep Bjornson's stage costumes, since they're gorgeous, but as long as the designer goes all out I'm good) and (I can dream) filmed at the Garnier.

I'd like a new version of the King and I that includes some of the songs but also has a more realistic portrayal of the cultural conflict and the ways in which Anna coming from a western culture didn't understand things and didn't always go about things the right way and tried to force western culture on them. Most portrayals of this story so far haven't been particularly nuanced and always take the side of western culture is the right one, Anna forcing her ideas was right and I'd like to see a more nuanced portrayal. Maybe even a portrayal of the actual story of what happened done by someone from that culture.

Any Thai involvement is unlikely considering how strict their law is about depictions of royalty - and the banning of (most)versions of this work there in particular... perhaps a more nuanced version might be the bridge needed to inspire a Thai response? Perhaps the creation of expats?
[and I know it's a tiny complaint to have in comparison with all the other things, but while we're fixing the musical could we please rewrite "Shall we dance" in 3 so that it's actually a waltz instead of in four? "one two three AND", indeed.]

You are right. And honestly I don't really blame them. I wince every time I watch Anna and the King and the scene where those two lovers (one of the king's wives and her lover) are going to be executed and Anna goes to the king to demand they be set free and he tells her that because she did that now he can't let them go and she gets angry and runs off, and the movie wants us to side with her. Having lived in an Asian culture, face is such a huge thing, not to mention he's the king. She should have asked him in private. Doing it the way she did guaranteed they would be killed, she should have known it, and that was entirely her fault. That's one big example of western vs. eastern culture where that adaption wants us to side wholly with the western character. And yes, killing them was wrong, of course it was. But there were ways of going about helping them. Just, yes, I have lots of feelings about it clearly.

And of course, one needs to consider that even whether the incident ever happened is a contested issue.

I wish Evita had been done with someone who could sing and act better than Madonna.

I had such hopes for the Into the Woods movie, and then they fucked with the story! I could understand (though not LIKE) them cutting all the metatextual stuff and the bit where they kill the narrator (though I'd certainly pay good money for that on the movie screen), but what the hell was the reasoning behind making the whole thing happen in all of a week? Half the point of the "Happily Ever After" being at the end of act one is that you only GET "Happily Ever After" if you stop telling the story there! You get your wished-for baby, you marry a prince, you also marry a prince, congrats! Happily Ever After! But then it turns out that life is complicated and babies cry a lot! That's the point!

uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh
So yeah, I'd like to see that one done again a bit better.
I wouldn't mind a better version of A Little Night Music too, while we're writing our wishlists.

Avenue Q.

I know its pretty dated now and puppetry isn't exactly popular - but I still want a movie version.

I still think of 'What do you do with a BA in English' as my personal theme song :'D
