I agree. Unfortunately, there seems to be a real push in fanfic to write stories that have no plot. It's all about writing character interactions and conversations and the slice-of-life jibberish that goes on between the scenes--the stuff that doesn't make it into media because it stops a story dead in its tracks. I don't even bother to recommend guidelines for writing to fic writers because no one cares. But yeah... Plotless fic is something I don't want to read and people really need to take something like No Plot on their stories so I can filter it out. :/

What the fuck auto-correct. It's tag not take.

God forbid people write what they want to, instead of what you want them to! Not all of us do this to "perfect out craft". Fanfic has ALWAYS been at least partly about filling in the scenes we don't get to see in order to explore the lives and relationships of characters beyond what the creators give us. Just because that's not your cup of tea, it doesn't mean the rest of us are doing it wrong and need ~recommended guidelines.

Scolding ayrt for having their own reading preferences is a tad hypocritical, since you're arguing that people should write what they want.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-28 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Point to where I am insulting the anon for having different preferences than the "jibberish" some people write, and we can talk.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-28 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I said "scolding", not insulting. Please read more carefully if you want me to respond seriously.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-28 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and I meant that I am not going to be shamed for "scolding" a person who insults others. Just because you didn't understand my comment doesn't mean I didn't understand yours. If you want to criticize someone, the anon above calling fanfic that doesn't meet their preferences "jibberish" is a good place to start.

Well, there's the terminology "plotty fic" for fics that are centered around a plot. You'll often know it anyway by the fic's length or its notes or even the author's preferred style of writing.

Myself, I've never been an avid book reader, (therefore) never aspired to be a best-selling writer and I only really like/d fanfic for "character interactions and slice-of-life jibberish" which is just my thing in other medias as well. Which is also why I don't care for this secret in the slightest but anyway.

Have you... never read a short story in your life? Like, ever?

(Anonymous) 2020-07-28 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Short stories have all the same elements as a novel in terms of plot and structure. It's just a shorter story.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-28 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
I take it you haven't read a lot of short stories.

Some of them do go more for the experiential or imagist. It's just how they be.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-28 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Look at something like "Hills Like White Elephants" by Hemingway. 95% of that short story is dialogue, and there's no real resolution to the story because it's left open-ended. It relies on the readers coming to their own conclusions as to what the context is and what the ultimate end of the story will be. It's just a snapshot of a single moment in time and a conversation between two people.

"It's all about writing character interactions and conversations and the slice-of-life jibberish that goes on between the scenes--the stuff that doesn't make it into media because it stops a story dead in its tracks. "

Since that's one of the strengths of fanfiction, that it supplies moments that the source does not, I'm not sure what you're complaining about.

You're complaining that water is wet?
