OP said they have a problem with the trope, not with Polly Oliver who they expect to die single in a house full of cats. Maybe you're not used to it but there's definitely some media in which someone the audience themselves can't be sure is a man or a woman is suddenly approached by some white knight who wants to shower her with affection as he does to every woman. Sometimes there is even some shitty talk about how it's in hormones or whatever, like... give it a break.

But I don't get it. By OP's logic, is there any way Polly Oliver can have a bf/gf without the story being transphobic? If the answer in no, and the secret sounds like it would be, I have bad news for OP.

On the opposite?! This trope is pretty transphobic as Polly Oliver regardless of seeing her/himself as being trans *passes* as male, and then some guy who just knows they are biologically female for no reason will flirt with them (like they often do to every other female, absolutely nothing different) and even treat them as some cute delicate lady damsel in distress sometimes.
It is not transphobic to expect Polly Oliver to find love by a) being approached by someone who *gasp* doesn't have sexual intentions, at least at first, b) being approached by someone who knows their gender because someone has told them or c) Lord forbid Polly Oliver actually makes a pass on their preferred gender.

Oh, okay, thank you for explaining. I didn't know the trope specifically means situations where the guy magically knows Polly is a girl and treats her as such, including being the driving force and having sexual or romantic intentions from the onset.
