I think you share this opinion with basically every Taylor Swift fan ever. :P I actually get so much enjoyment out of how unanimous the whole "Y U No make Cruel Summer a single??!" sentiment is among us. It's one of my favorite purely pop songs of all time (maybe even my favorite), and it really does suck that she didn't make it the final single.

Honestly, because of how she released Folklore, I feel like she could've STILL released Cruel Summer as a single. It would be hilarious to me for her to be trending for Folklore, AND charting for a song off the previous album. I feel like that's exactly the kind of 2 Famous 4 U fuckery Taylor Swift was born to achieve.

I do kind of wonder if she was planning to release Cruel Summer as the final single, but then with Covid, and major racial issues coming to the fore, she's afraid to get massively shit on for releasing a song with the world "cruel" in it that's about her personal romantic life. I can just picture the shitstorm of, "Taylor Swift is SOOOO self-centered it's unbelievable. You know what's 'cruel' Taylor? RACISM AND COVID-19 AND OUR GARBAGE POLITICAL SYSTEM, THAT'S WHAT'S 'CRUEL.'"

(Personally I think that argument is dumb as fuck. People are allowed to care about their personal lives, even during periods of extreme injustice and disaster. And art is allowed to be about the same things it always was, trivial or not. But you just know there'd be an extremely vocal minority who would decide she was "cancelled" again, due to the optics.)
