nayrt, but like, you get that these days 'conservative' means 'values money over literally anything else, but is also bad with money'. because that's what most of the self-identified conservative parties in the world are all about. so what else should we think of someone who calls themselves conservative?

I love when OPs come to their secret and say this. You put a somewhat controversial opinion on a website known for discourse and wank. Like good job, you got what you expected? I just always find it self-congratulatory and silly.

Look, prior to Bush jr's administration, I would've said live and let live, people have their differing opinions, etc. But if you claim conservatism here and now, in the darkest timeline? You're standing with bigots and fascists. Expecting people to be tolerant of that is a bit much, though I know that's been the conservative cry for decades.

My mom's generally decent when it comes to "politics", but she sometimes gets into tolerance paradox territory and it's super frustrating.

My mom voted for Nixon TWICE and despite this fact she is horrified by modern day conservatives.

It's sad. I sincerely WISH I could be chill about differing political beliefs. And I generally am, when it's a case of someone with liberal values/politics being either a bit more or a bit less liberal than I am. Someone does not have to agree with me 100%, about everything, for me to recognize that they're probably a decent person who's doing their best to comprehend the crazy world we live in, just like I am.

But to be conservative in 2020? You're either stupid, or a hateful bigot, and you may well be both.

This. My parents voted for Bush Jr. the first time around. They both are still mourning the death of the Republican party. They haven't voted Republican since his first term other than in primaries. They are still too conservative for my tastes, but even they recognize that it is impossible to stand with the current Republican party and current American conservatism.
