It's hard to get invested in imaginary people when you've demonstrated through your words and actions that you don't give a shit about real ones unless they're you.

On the contrary, fandom is becoming all about caring about fictional people and not giving a shit about real ones. For an early example, look at ship wars and flames that people got just for not liking someone else's favorite character. For a worse and more recent trend, look at how many people have been bullied into attempting suicide because they made porn of characters that fandom wanted to "protect" from being sexualized.

fandom's ever cared about real people more than fictional ones? since when? it's always been like this to some degree and your notion that this is somehow a new fangled kind of behavior is very rose-tinted of the past. ppl have been shit to one another over dumb fictional things for decades.
