(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)I just think it's more accurate, and more straightforward, to simply face the thing head on and say that political opinions are not equally worthy of respect and that certain political opinions simply deserve to be excluded from mainstream political society.
If they were willing to stipulate to that, sure. I just don't feel like anyone's going to be successful in changing how people see the word "opinion". Opinions have always been subjective things. Telling someone "your opinion is wrong" is almost always, at least in my experience, met with an instinctual "no it's not, it's an OPINION, opinions can't be wrong!" and "even if you disagree, you have to respect my opinion because this is America!" and whining about how "liberals are so intolerant of different opinions".
I mean, I suppose morality is subjective to a certain degree, too, depending on time and context and culture, but it's more objective than "but that's just like, your opinion, man". Framing it as a matter or morals and ethics and character is just more effective to me, personally, and puts more of the responsibility on the person to own their values, rather than seeing it as "just an opinion", which is more removed from them.
Maybe it's partly a semantic issue, I don't know. I just find letting them claim some really awful views as "just a difference of opinion" to be letting them off the hook in a way, and I'm not going to do that.
