General question to writers: do you censor your own work because you're worried about negative reactions from antis?

Because I sure as hell do now. :/

Re: Writers thread

(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely. I've never even posted anything anywhere because I know that I write weird stuff most people wouldn't be interested in and I just do it for fun, but I still have this "oh, can't write that, people will think it's TOO weird" thought from time to time even though I have no idea who these nebulous "people" are since I most likely will never share it anywhere.

Okay now i'm intrigued. I love weird fic. Honestly, I really miss stuff where it's not something you'd ever dream up yourself. Fandom feels like a retread of all the same ideas these days.

Can you give an example of your plots op?

Mostly...let's call it incest-adjacent lol. Twisted, co-dependent relationships between siblings that are borderline incestuous but not quite, which just fascinates me for some reason I can't quite explain. Maybe not that weird in the land of fandom where Supernatural exists, but not really accepted in the "regular" world (and I always try to write original fic*).

*For some reason original fic feels less intimidating than attempting to write fanfic, although I know it probably should be the opposite. I just don't feel the pressure with original fic to get it "right" the way I do with fanfic, though. (Might try writing some soon, anyway, because I've gotten into a couple tiny fandoms that don't have any fic for my ships.)

I am all over unhealthy relationships in fic so I think your fic sounds pretty awesome. I can see why you don't post it though anon.

At times I would censor myself, but mostly because I was worried that the direction I was hoping to take was nothing more than shock value, and I didn't want to be seen as the shock value writer.

But generally, if I want to write it, I write it. There's always someone who won't like it. And someone who will. They're all entitled to their opinions, and anyone who crosses the line and harasses you for what you write is a cunt, anyway (confessed former cunt here... I was extremely immature 20 years ago).

I think we were all a level of dickweed fan at some point nonny. When I was a teenager I sure as hell was.

Is that really censoring yourself? I would have thought of that more as just part of the creative process?

Re: Writers thread

Well, it's more like I was half-invested into the idea, and think it would have been great with a different story. I played with the idea for a while, that is, I wrote whole chapters trying to make the idea work, but ultimately decided it didn't serve the story well. I ended up doing a "milder" form of the idea, which took away from some of the impact but I guess still accomplished what it needed to.

I was definitely concerned the imagery of the original idea was too much. Maybe that is part of the creative process, but part of me wishes I hadn't been so conflicted either.

No, but i do post my work through an account that's not connected to any of my main accounts on sites like tumblr or twitter (I will never understand people who link their ao3 to their irl social media account - those people either don't know fear or are that dumb).

Re: Writers thread

(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I do not understand that either. I even split my fandoms to different ao3 accounts. :|

Even then I'm paranoid though.

Re: Writers thread

I don't in the writing process, but I do in posting. Like, I recently had an idea for a story where a couple I know squicks out most of the fandom has sex, and I couldn't shake the plot bunny, so I banged it out (pun intended). Now it gets to live on my computer hard drive forever, though, because I don't want to get run out of the fandom (yet. Maybe someday I'll feel like burning bridges).

Re: Writers thread

(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Sheesh. I hate that fandom is like this now. You could post under a sock and then orphan it?

Re: Writers thread

(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. The story i'm finishing up now has come out okay. It's dark psychological horror where all the boundaries get blurred and the main characters triumph but they're all changed forever because of it. I think I've done it some justice.

But... it's incest and there's dubcon. So I won't be posting it :(

Re: Writers thread

(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah. As policies, "don't cross the streams" and "do not engage" have served me well, but I'm a small fish.

Re: Writers thread

(Anonymous) 2020-08-01 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes. The first draft is always purely self-indulgent, but the second draft is where I start cutting out bits that may be objectionable or reword them. I don't do it too often though.

Re: Writers thread

(Anonymous) 2020-08-02 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah and I've crippled myself over it to the point where I don't even enjoy writing anymore because I know the things I'm into will get me destroyed by others in the fandom. It sucks and I wish I could get over it.

Re: Writers thread

(Anonymous) 2020-08-02 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
No. I don't think I write about anything that would be considered particularly controversial in fandom spaces - except for OP of #6, maybe. But even if I got a negative reaction, I'm not bothered. It's impossible to please everyone all the time with your writing and it's best not to try. I write the best story I can with what I have. Not everyone's going to like it, and that's fine.

No. I don't know that much of what I write would agitate them one way or another (other than the incest from Supernatural), but fuck no.

I'll write what I like and they can suck it.

I love AO3 but right now I am missing specialised archives. Tags just seem to be too broad for finding the best of certain genres like dark fic or dubcon.

I've come across several specific fanfic rec Tumblrs - maybe try over there?

My ship tag is pretty peacefull. I feel like I can post the most fucked up stuff and no one would bat an eye.

Re: Writers thread

I love that about older, almost dead fandoms. Nobody cares what anyone writes, we're just all thankful somebody is still writing anything.

Re: Writers thread

Not because of antis, fuck the antis, but I toned down my breeding kink in a rebuild-the-Air-People AtLA fic out of fear of scaring away potential readers that'd be here for the worldbuilding. And in the end, I fear the fic lacked substance.

One and only time I self-censored. Now I want to write idfic? I write the goddamned idfic it all its gory details.
