Fandom how? Do you mean fans discussing classical music? Why is that weird?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-05 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Where do they hang out? I'd like to see the classical music fandom.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-05 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconded!

There are quite a few fics for Amadeus, the film.

Obnoxious, pretentious wankers seem to be part of every fandom. It might not have the same air as it does in classical music fandom, but they're there.

I completely believe you about classical music fandom, but I'm seconding everyone asking where the fandom you mean is. Do you mean pretentious people who condescend about the music (which I've definitely seen), or is there a whole fanfic scene or something that I don't know about?

like RP fandom, or the pseudoRP fandom that happens with historical fiction like hamilton and amodeus, or like....stanning actual compositions?

Classical music is my absolute favourite too! I never even knew there was fandom to associate with it, but I can definitely see how it could get pompous and annoying for sure. (I'll gladly stick to my old man radio broadcast for all my classical musings and content)

"why there's a fandom for it" comes off as very weird given that classical music has depended on crowdsourced funding for a very long time. Who do you think has the closet full of public radio tote bags?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-06 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
As a classical musician-- I wouldn't necessarily say "crowdsourced." Public radio is one thing, but the ongoing existence and maintenance of most orchestras, opera and ballet companies in North America rests on major donors, that those organizations pour money and effort into courting. "Crowdsourced" implies that the main source of income is many small donations from middle-class people, which... yeah, classical music would be a lot less dickish and elitist if that were the case, but it's not really.

Good points. Although I strongly suspect this is yet another f!s "you're not a twue fan if you're not posting to AO3" secret.

There's another one somewhere about professional musicians but I can't remember where
