Fandom history lesson!

I'm not sure how long you've been watching scans_daily, so I might be stating the obvious here, but there's kind of this...big wanky schism in the comm's history, which is what I believe anonymous is talking about up there. Back before 2005 it was very slashy (in fact, that used to be kind of the point of the community), but around the end of that year for a variety of reasons a bunch of new posters came from outside lj fandom and joined the comm. They thought the slash was icky but they just didn't get that it was a part of the community's culture.

There was a lot of wank that basically amounted to the new posters going "why are you people [i.e. slashers] ruining our community with this weird stuff?" despite the fact that the slash fans had been there first and in fact had started the community. (There were a lot of little comments about it, but I think it came to a head here (http://community.livejournal.com/scans_daily/1049581.html).) In the end, a bunch of people (mostly older posters) left, the tone of the whole place changed, and eventually it became more like what it is today.

It's worth noting that most of the slashers/older posters were female and most of the newer posters were male, which is how it relates to 174.
