105. You mean you're jealous and petty?

109. What do they sing about that could be offensive?

112. There's... I mean.. "Subtext" is not actually an anagram for "buttsex." There are plenty of het pairings with purely subtextual evidence for them. The only person stopping you from having more diversity in your shipping pantheon is you, especially if you're the type to seek out a ship rather than waiting complacently for it to come to you.

Me, I'm still waiting on a token slash ship that I'd really love to show up.

116. Somebody said it yesterday, but can we please get our heads on straight? Characters can't actually be Mary Sues. It isn't their fault - it's the writer's fault.

131. Why shouldn't you? I don't know why everybody hates on Disney adaptations. They're not accurate, sure, but that doesn't mean that they're not good.

137. I used to pretend to be a guy to get along in MMO circles. It was just too stressful otherwise. Hooray for sexism and stereotypes in gaming communities.

148. FUCK YOU JACK/TENENBAUM OTP OMG HOW DARE YOU INSULT THEIR LOVE

153. Kingdom Hearts was not made to be taken seriously. Playing the game and mentally adding copious amounts of cursing and chatspeak makes the game much more interesting.

166. What can I say, I like medical drama. It's pretty awful. I know that objectively.

167. It's interesting, because I was just thinking about the last wank explosion about this and sorting out that I don't think fantasy != reality really has any bearing on the argument. I don't recall anyone ever saying that people who love rapefic are going to go out and rape people or are incapable of comprehending real rape or feeling sympathy for the survivors of rape (though I do have to wonder about you when you absolutely cannot comprehend why a rape victim would feel uncomfortable with your masturbation material). So, really, it never was a question of reality. It's just that people are disturbed at the desire to get your rocks off on somebody else's suffering, and wary of the people who do so. I guess the argument in response to that would be that there is no one suffering in actuality, but I don't think that's really the point - people like the OP here are still getting off on hypothetical human suffering. That no one was wounded doesn't make that any less disturbing (or maybe even unethical) to some people.

TL;DR, this isn't a discussion about reality, it's a discussion about fantasy, sadism, discomfort and ethics.

173. I was with you until "heterophobia."

174. Then get the fuck off of livejournal. What is wrong with you? There are plenty of places where you can talk about fandom in terms of who would beat up whom - maybe even with girls, zOMG! Don't blame women because you're too stupid to be in the right part of the internet.

This.
Fanfiction itself always seemed romance-dominated to me. Fighting really doesn't lend itself too well to words.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Words are suited for plenty of things beyond romance, though.

[identity profile] sailor-escapism.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I never said they weren't. But the OP is talking about there being few fighting fanfics versus romance fics, which is a huge no-brainer to me.

I also think romance is one of the easier things to write, so that's probably why such a huge percentage of fanfic is romance.

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I don't think the point was romance vs. fighting so much as romance vs. anything else. Romance is easy to write -- for women. You don't see (as) many men doing it. It depends on the fandom, of course, but usually you have to wade through mounds and mounds of romance/angst to find anything else, much less anything else that isn't utter shit.

Hahahahahaha

No.

You don't see as many men do it because they write under female psuedonyms, because it's n ot manly to write romance.

This too. I'd be curious to know how many authors were actually male that OP just assumed were women because the fics were romantic.

[identity profile] sosaith.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm thrilled when I find out a writer I love is male. And, some of them write some really awesome romance or really hot sex, het and slash.

[identity profile] sailor-escapism.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
That's kind of true for anything, though. Most people are not talented, whether it's writing, art, whatever. And there was never a time, as far as I can recall, that fanfiction wasn't mostly about the romance, so I don't think women popped up suddenly and ruined everything.

105. You mean you're jealous and petty?

Only sometimes. ;) The caps come from the third Cindy movie, where Ana was redeemed and all she wanted was to find someone who loved her for who she was.
