I do understand actually- I guess I didn't explain clear enough in the secret- but occasionally some people have thoughts otherwise, and when someone plays with that in a fic, I've found there's always going to be several people screaming to even consider that someone questions their sexuality is homophobic. It does happen- The webcomic DAR documents that there are Lesbians Until Graduation and Gays until Graduation.

I was really trying to point out the absurdity of many fics having character that are by all accounts straight "waking up gay" and then assuming people who say it's not their cup of tea that they MUST BE HOMOPHOBIC.

... Did you just say a webcomic documents?

The amount of stupid flying back and forth in this argument is just astounding.

Actually DAR is pretty awsome. Certainly some of the most realistic gay folks in... shit, in ANY medium.

I will agree that there's sort of a double standard, OP, but I think there's a lot of reasons for that double standard to exist.

Personally, I find it really uncomfortable for gay characters to suddenly "realize they've been straight all along" because, to me, it invokes the idea of "curing" homosexuality, and I immediately start putting a motive to the fic (because, frankly, it's quite possible the author IS motivated to show how "teh ghey can be fixed!!1!"). There's no corresponding straight-to-gay real life issue that I'm aware of, and I've never heard of a straight person being brainwashed and conditioned and guilted into "turning gay," IRL.

When homosexuality stops being treated like a disease, when I can read a fic and be CERTAIN (or almost certain) that the author isn't trying to show how homosexuality can be "fixed," then I'll be just as comfortable with "gay character realizing they're bi/straight!" as I am with "straight character realizing they're bi/gay!" Until then, though.

That's my .02

Of course, the problem inherent in a lot of canons is that you can really only be straight or gay. I can understand your point, but honestly, I dislike the fact that people will jump down the throat of an author writing a gay character with someone of the opposite sex. It seems like only characters that are straight in canon can have a sexuality somewhere else along the spectrum of sexual attraction, but a gay character has to be all gay all the time (and God, Buddha, and little green apples help you if you dare suggest that maybe this gay character could be interesting in a relationship with a character of the opposite sex and is quite possibly bi).

It's why, as much as I'd love to explore some of those possibilities, I won't. No matter how many disclaimers and author's notes and links to my crap-ton of slash fanfic I put in before the story, there will be at least one person who calls me a homophobe for daring to write X character as anything other than the most homosexual person ever in the history of humanity. It's annoying enough to get comments about how such-and-such character is seme and so-and-so is uke and OMG HOW DARE I SWITCH THEM TEH HORRORZ!!!?!31!E!!

But you know, I really do think this problem you're talking about will lessen as RL homophobia lessens. (Not to say that someone who writes a gay character as bi/straight is homophobic--just to say that people are less likely to READ it that way as the number of RL homophobes goes down or as they become less vocal.)

Re: your frustrations, though, there are idiots all over the internet. There's always someone who won't like your fic. There are still plenty of fandoms where writing slash will get you plenty of nasty comments, even if it's well-characterized, even if you write only "straight" fic ordinarily. Do you write fic for the idiots? I know I don't. So don't let them stop you from doing something you want to do--heck, if it's good enough, you might even convert them to the idea. :)
