102. Hindu gods fandom?

125. Same. Not to mention Radiohead.

126. Hi, are you me?

133. I don't know, OP. I just don't know.

174. I wish fandom argued over who could beat who too, but I mean... did it ever? I'm late to fandom so I honestly don't know - but people have told me that women essentially created fandom, and male fans never really did much in the way of fanworks (except argue with each other on forums).

174. Oh, yeah, I'm 31. When I was a kid and all things fandom would pop up, the conversations were always who would win in a fight; Picard or Kirk? Now it's like, who would fuck whom first, Picard or Kirk?

And I would say it was men who really started fandoms as we see them today. Especially sci-fi and anime fandoms. When I was a kid, girls did not watch sci-fi or fantasy unless it was things like The Disney, Dark Crystal or Labyrinth. But fandoms like anime, which at that time was either fighting anime or mecha like Voltron or Akira, Batman, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek were practically a man only field.

Now it's fine for women to like sci-fi and anime.

Yeah, you are basically wrong.

I'm sorry fandom has gotten bigger and now you have to see stuff you don't like. :(

What the hell are you talking about? Where did I say that I am seeing stuff that I don't like? Read again and think before you type.

Re: 174

Sorry, most of the people who talk like that aren't fine with the "female" sections of fandom.

And while girls in fandom might have been less mainstream twenty years ago, they definitely existed. Men and women created different aspects of fandom, maybe, but women keep having to struggle to be recognized. Sad.

But did men write fanfiction or draw fanart? Maybe they did. I guess to me that's what fandom is (more than forum conversations), but that might just be my own definition. I only got into fandom in college, so I probably associate it too much with shipping and the like.

Yes, men wrote fanfiction and drew fanart. Many of those men grew up to become comic book artists and writers that worked for the Big Two (DC and Marvel).

Before my time, then. Wonder where the boys with those tendencies are now.

They are still out there. But they don't seem to venture in fandom circles where they are outnumbered by women. And stranger still, the vast majority are doing fanvids.

For example of guys in current fandom;

The 10 Doctors: A Doctor Who fancomic (http://comics.shipsinker.com/)
New Voyages: A Star Trek webseries (http://www.startreknewvoyages.com/)
Jawa Force : A Star Wars fan comic (http://www.theforce.net/comics/fancomics/jawaforce/html.asp)
Batman: Dead End a fan short (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36h5ApnWfNs)
The Hero of Time: A Legend of Zelda fan movie (http://www.theherooftime.com/)
The Crow: Devil's Night (A fan short) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qvKviMnGrg&eurl=http://www.fanfilms.net/index.php?cid=38&fid=1163)
Nana's Everyday Life: An Elfen Lied fan comic (http://manga.clone-army.org/nana.php)

Well, maybe they'll go into movies in the future.

Of course, I'd also point out that those are pretty action-centered fandoms, I think, and further that several (but not all) are pretty old fandoms too, the ones where men may have originally (and probably still do in the case of Star Trek, Star Wars, and Batman) outnumbered women.

But it's still fandom. And there are new stuff too and not all are action;

Double K: A Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann fan comic (http://captainosaka.deviantart.com/art/DOUBLE-K-001-82688715)
Dr. Horrible: The Early Years (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIs_Bp1Bs3w)
Assassin's Creed: fan short (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H--ignHSgVA&feature=related)
Death Note: A fan film (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BznpWrLBpM)

Funnily, enough slash of Kirk and Spock existed as long as you were prolly alive. And written in things such as fanmags and the such.

Re: 174

[identity profile] immoral-cascade.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
When I was younger, it was always really embarrassing for me to admit that I liked anything like DBZ or Batman. :[ It's nicer now, but I'm not surprised at all about the lack of women in earlier fandoms.
