174. Dude, I totally agree... Kind of. I'm a girl. And I don't think it's necessarily all girls, just needy or lonely ones.

Anyway, fandom is now little more than romance. People feel the need to ship EVERYTHING. And they also feel the need to sexualise everything, as if they are too goddamn stupid to understand the dynamics of a platonic relationship. And don't even get my started on twincest. Talk about missing the point!

THIS THIS THIS. ♥ ♥

God, it kills me when people being friends moves right into OMG THEY MUST BE HAVING SEX. And twincest is just... :( not my cup of tea, there's a strong difference between brotherly/sisterly love and WE HAVE TO BUMP UGLIES RIGHT NOW love.

^ THIS!

OK, OP 174 is an idiot for implying this is somehow because of a conspiracy by Estrogen Femmebots from Venus taking over the world, and his point was lost because of that comment.

THAT BEING SAID, shipping is a near monopoly these days in fandom. There is way less diversity than there used to be; and those of us who don't ship have to lurk on the sidelines cause there's nothing for us anymore. And yes, the idea that every single relationship must be sexualized is....uh...no comment

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
No, just no. And all shippers aren't lonely or needy girls. Fuck, I'm not one and I shipped just as much when I was in a relationship and when I'm out of one and right now, I'm taking a break from the dating scene to work on myself and enjoying the single life which is pretty lively. But I tired of the "lonely fangirl" stereotype that still persist despite a large number of shippers that are happily single, date around, in relationships or even married.

And very, very few people ship EVERYTHING. It might look like it in a fandom, but most individuals ship a few pairings for assorted amount of reasons.

And don't put the silly "NO ONE UNDERSTANDS PLATONIC FRIENDSHIPS!" speech, romances doesn't exclude it, you know. It could be that they do appreciate it to a level that they can see it get to a romantic one. After all, a foundation of a good romantic relationship is friendship.

And even on the incest part, they may not even ship every twincest/incest pairing out there, but that particular pairing appealed to them.

[identity profile] rhoux.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
So, just because you're not lonely that means that the majority must all have healthy social/romantic lives too?

You make great points, but the fact is that they don't apply to the majority. Only few people fall in to those categories.

And I stand by what I said earlier. Twincest is either the inability to understand how powerful a relationship twins have without sexualising it, or pure indulgence.

I mean really, "It could be that they do appreciate it to a level that they can see it get to a romantic one."? Are you fucking kidding me? That sentence did nothing but back up what I was saying about not being able to fathom platonic love.

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
It more plausible than what you're saying. I hate that generalization because, more often than not, it's not true.

Hell, if we're going to go there, we might as well say that all non-shippers are people who are angry that they can't get any or they so emotionally disabled that they can't maintain a romantic relationship and decided to give up and lash out against it and think they're high and mighty because they're above "romance stuff". See how that sounds silly? When you make a generalization that most shippers are lonely girls, you sound just like that.

It doesn't back up what you said, actually. People can ship a pairing because they do appreciate their friendship to the point they want to ship it romantically. For a lot of people, romantic love is a more intimate level than a platonic one and want to see interaction on that level. It's the basis of the ship and they can appreciate for what it is canonically AND ship it, it is not a "you can't have your cake and eat it too" situation.

Also, not everyone ships every friendship, hell, many a ship fan do have friendships they love that they don't ship either.

Stop acting like romance can't blossom from friendships either because that is quite possible. Not all romance ships are sexual anyway.

Same goes to incest as well, as weird as it is, it does happen. After all, familial bonds aren't innate, they are built with interaction with the family members. And not all people ship every twincest pairing, hell most ship one or two, and usually because an unusual situation they're in more often than not.

Then talk and write about what you do enjoy. If you do it without bashing what other people enjoy, then you will find other people who will share your interests.

But if you whine and expect other people do all the work, then guess what? You're not going to have much fun!

Also, you fail for agreeing with the OP.

[identity profile] rhoux.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Excuse me a moment: ROFL.

I don't recall ever trying to get people to stop doing what they enjoy just because I don't like it, and I certainly don't recall bashing - I thought I was just saying I think people who DO like it miss the point - I guess bashing and voicing your opinion are one in the same in fandom, huh? That'd explain all the wank.

So is this how it works? I reply to a secret agreeing about it, and that means I whine about it all the time?

I've never spoken up about it before, because for the most part I don't care enough to. I only spoke up now because I saw someone else with a similar (not the same) opinion, and I thought I might as well voice mine as well.

So please, don't be such an asshat and assume you know me, because you don't.

And lastly, you're basically saying 'to each his own', and yet in the last line you reprimand me for agreeing with someone? Hark who's talking! ; D
