I think that kind of fandom - the kind of fandom that is, to put it bluntly, primarily centered around being horny for the male lead - does still exist to some extent, even if it's much less common than it used to be. Lucifer feels a lot like that to me, for instance (although I'm not in the fandom myself).

Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

i think they still exist in larger numbers than you might think, i just think they float around the mid-range of popularity so they're not juggernauts like m/m can get sometimes where everyone eventually hears about it, but they're still plenty popular in their own corners and have thriving fandoms.

I'm sure you're right - I actually thought of another example just now (Good Girls)

Yeah. I'm in a few fandoms, and those self inserts are my bread and butter. Juggernauts in some of these tend to be M/M, but if you look around, they're there. And if you can't find it one AO3, check FF.net, and if it's that old, check LJ comms and archives (if they were saved/still up).

This is often true, and I agree with you about Lucifer being an example of this. That said, I don't think this is always what a massive het ship boils down to. For instance, Scully/Mulder was the central pairing in like 90% of TXF fanfic, and I don't think that ship was centered around being horny for Mulder any more than literally any ship has a certain percentage of people who are primarily into it because they're horny for one half of the pairing.

Oh, I absolutely agree! Although I think quite a lot of het ships have an element of that, it's definitely not universal. I think I was also looking at what OP said about the other common ships being basically Male Lead / OFC.

Oh, right, duh, I didn't think to factor in that bit about Male Lead/OFC, but you're absolutely right. That definitely does tend to suggest a higher percentage of people who are horny for the male lead.

I kind of jumped the gun to be like #NotAllHetShips, lol.
