Look, I thought the whole spiritbending thing was a big old asspull, but think of it this way: Aang was the last of his people. It was very, very important to him to preserve the Air Nomad philosophies and way of life. If he had given up on the sort of... Pragmatic pacifism he'd been following, and gone into that fight with the intention of killing Ozai, wouldn't that have been just another little death of the Air Nomads?

But even the Avatars who were from the Air Nomad culture were for Ozai's death.
