Performative is exactly what it is. 2000s style edgy humor and mocking isn't cool anymore so people get their kicks from, for example, yelling at lesbians and gay men for "excluding" trans people from their dating pools.

it's not an issue that really affects people outside of fandom.

The online bubble is something, isn't it? All of this was supposed to end JKR and what she said was met with shrugs outside of fandom and kweer Twitter.
