Re: What's your new thing?

So I know Marie Kondo has become something of a meme, but I read her book before it became famous and it has actually changed my life. I hadn't realised how much stuff I had been hoarding until I started looking at my life with a more analytical eye. Also I had never connected my inability to keep my house tidy with the fact that not everything had its own place. It's definitely still a work in progress and I don't follow her rules absolutely but yeah, that's been my big new thing for a little while now.

I never read her book, but I loved her show and it really help me tidy up my things. I still have a bunch of stuff, but it's not longer all over the place because everything has a spot and it's so much easier finding something to wear when it's all neat and organized in my closet instead of being jumbled up on the floor.

AYRT That's really great nonny. :) If you're ever looking for more inspiration then I highly recommend her book. :)

Her book gave me the incentive to finally get rid of all of the stuff I had been hanging onto because people had given it to me/what if I wanted or needed it later/well I still KIND of like it/etc. and I'm so glad for it. I was holding onto things that were honestly making me unhappy because I felt guilty about giving them away or selling them.

AYRT Same nonny. It's crazy how much negative emotional impact keeping hold of stuff for those reasons has too.

same here. her way of clearing out has been an eye-opener for me and has really helped to clear out so much shit i was holding onto for years. like i'd always been told to 'just get rid of it' but when it was a gift or something i'm holding onto because 'it might be useful' that sort of advice just... never worked.

but her way of attributing genuine functionality or sentiment to an object just clicks in my brain and now i find it so much easier to clear things out. it's been great and now i have so much more free-space for the things i do like.

sa.

it also helps that she doesn't advocate for the pure throw-everything-you-own-out-so-your-home-is-a-soulless-husk-minimalism either, having things is good! just make sure you actually want them, and it's just been so great to not feel like keeping the things i actually like is some kind of failure because i haven't made my home look like a lifeless show-room.
