Hey, sci-fi/fantasy fans - are "moderate races" a thing? I found the phrase in a sci-fi fic and it sounds very strange.

Re: Questions thread!

I never heard the phrase. More context might help, though.

AYRT; context

"Like most moderate races, Starfleet always kept spare body-parts needed for surgeries. Some of these parts were given by donors; others were purchased from other planets, or surgically removed from the deceased."

Yeah, I don't think that's a thing

That is the weirdest thing I have ever heard and no, not a 'thing'. Is this canon or fanon?

Yeah, I don't think that's a thing either -- I'd like to know "Moderate in terms of what"?

Did they mean "modern" as in "having access to the latest medical technology?" Idk.

I think this might be meant as compared to highly advanced "alien" races or less developed. Like in the middle between those two?

NGL, that sentence just screams horror to me.

Who's the biggest celebrity you've ever met?

Mine are Ian McKellen (charm personified) and Patrick Stewart (straight up nice guy).

Met some Doctor Who people including Tennant and Barrowman at a convention. Got my photo taken with four female Star Trek actresses. Got stuck in an elevator for a few minutes with Armin Shimmerman at Dragoncon one year.

Oh man I would love to meet those two but worry I wouldn't know what to say.

I mostly met bands when I could be bothered with that sort of stuff. Met Muse (when they weren't as big) and Franz Ferdinand (when they were bigger) a few times. Loads of minor bands that probably nobody remembers nowadays as well.

I walked past and said hello to David Tennant when he was filming in Cambridge. He was between takes and I had a lecture or supervision to get to so it was a brief interaction!

The biggest name I've met properly is probably Andy Serkis. He was lovely and even if he hated it on the inside, externally he never gave the impression of being anything but delighted if people asked him to say things as Gollum.

...Clearly having an ongoing internal monologue, but also fascinated in a slightly alien way by his surroundings? and/or playing the piano

I met Patrick Stewart too, he was super nice.
I've also met 3 of the Monty Python guys, John Cleese, Michael Palin and Eric Idle. They were also super nice. :)

I met Rachel Leigh Cook at Pensacon last year, and she complimented my hair, which was Bright-ass orange. She was so nice that I actually felt kind of guilty because I hadn't ever seen any of her movies. Then I met Steven Weber, who was also really nice, and we talked about Reefer Madness: The Musical for a while, which was pretty cool.

Aw, that's so cool about Cook. She seems like she'd be a pretty chill person to know :).

Nice to hear that about Weber being friendly, too.

I met Michael Moorcock at a book signing.
Still kicking myself for not getting his autograph.
