I guess I'm just wondering more about the details, then.

There are a few categories of "forbidden relationship" situations that I can think of, and at least some could have a happy ending.

If your relationship is taboo because of the specific society you're in, then finding a place where it's not taboo (or finding a setup where the nature of the relationship isn't obvious to the outside world) is certainly an option. Same gender couples (especially women) and polyamorous triads throughout history have managed this.
