Russia in the 80s and 90s

(Anonymous) 2020-08-12 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Long shot, but can anyone point me in the general direction of any resources on Russia in the 80s and 90s? I want to write fic where, in part of the divergence from canon, the protagonist lives in north-west Russia for four/five years in this general period. The canon is American urban fantasy and he's living with a bunch of very old wizards, so I don't need exacting detail - but I like research, and I want to get things right.

I don't have resources per se but remember that this was the USSR. So it may mean tweaking your keywords a bit to find things that happened under the USSR that are actually Russia-focused, which probably won't be hard since no one gave a flying shit about Eastern Europe (tragically) until the Yugoslav wars in the early 90s and everything post-Berlin Wall fall (contrary to pop culture reference, the fall of the wall in 89 was not the immediate fall of communism and the dissolution of the USSR, that happened a few years later).

if nothing else refine your search terms to "communist Russia" and you might get better results. It would mean having to weed out 1960s Cold War stuff but that seems like it wouldn't be too hard. I say flippantly, not knowing how hard a search that might be.

Anecdotally I have a cousin slightly older than me who visited Russia in the 1980s and said the rumors of bartering for American jeans was totally real, he swapped all his pants for Russian vodka and other products.

I would google people's life stories about living in that era. You might even want to try Google books. When I was researching historical info about Russia for about the same period for uni, books were far more helpful than Internet based info.

Two things to bear in mind:

- Sometimes it's a matter of persisting until you get the right keywords
- be ruthless about your sources. If it's published by Americans then there will be spin, especially if it's contemporary.
- If it's published by the Soviets prior to Perestroika, there will also be spin.
- Treat official Russian and Soviet data as if they are outright lies because half the time they are or were
- Google translate can provide a decent stab at translating Russian, enough to give you an idea of what's going on

Good luck nonny!

*A few things to consider, not two

A quick search on books.google.com gives some potentially useful resources:

The Ushanka Show YT Channel! It's made by a guy born in the USSR in 1970 - so npt technically Russia. He has a lot of videos about every day life in the Soviet Union.

Searching for scandals around Russia's entries into Eurovision might five you something of an angle?

The 80s and 90s are very different eras for the USSR/Russia, since the beginning of the 90s is when the USSR stopped existing and a lot of the Soviet states started to break away from Russian rule. So it might be easier to decide on whether you want to place it in the 80s or 90s, if that's at all an option.
