149 - I think you're right. Some drabbles work very well, usually when the idea is humorous, and they can be useful for writers to learn about word choice and so on, but 90% of them would be better if they were 500+ words.

N!F3 - Urban Dictionary, honey. Failing that, google. If you know about this site and can submit a secret, I have faith in your ability to type 5 characters, hit enter, and find out what tl;dr means.

I totally agree with you on 149, anon. The only drabbles I've found worth reading are the ones that build up to a joke. Brevity is the soul of wit, yada. Crappy little 'mood pieces'? Fuck that shit, seriously. I want something I can get my teeth into.

I usually read science books because I'm not much of an All-Bran literature reader. I read what I like.

I can't think of any >500 right now, although I vaguely remember being forced to read them right now.

I can think of ones that would have been just fine as stories under five hundred words, though. Kafka's Metamorphosis leaps to mind. Or is a crappy little mood piece better when it's been dragged out kicking and screaming to a higher word count?

The detail would have been lacking, but the soul crushing hopelessness of it all could have been neatly conveyed in under 500 words.

A quick google tells me that I'd forgotten about the Shortest Story (not the actual title but I think it still holds the record.)

Of course, it wasn't a 'crappy' mood piece, it was actually rather affecting.

Six whole words. I think Hemingway probably did it on a bet, but it was still a good piece.
