I go by that rule, too. I thought that was still fairly commonplace?

A lot of people end up with 256, or some other random number, word "drabbles" and still label them as such.

First of all, I love the username. You must really know where your towel's at.

Second of all... doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose? Remove the challenge, if you will?

Thank you very much!

And yeah, that's exactly how I feel. I've never written a word under or over in a drabble, because I pick at it until it is 100. It seems like people who do that miss the whole point of the exercise.

I've probably written a word over or under because my the word count on Microsoft word never seems to jive with the online ones.

I think it's just that people aren't too sure what to call them. I know that I celebrate if I manage to write a drabble or a double-drabble (which I've seen 200-word fics called) when I set out to do one, but I'm not totally in it for the challenge of keeping my word count down. I just want to write a short little scene, so if I end up with less than five hundred words, I tend to call it a drabble just because there's really no better word for it. Even when I see "short fic" I kind of expect something in the 1000 word range, because that's still really, really short.

I just don't get the OP's problem with them, really. Short fiction is totally different from long fiction. It just seems to fall into the same category as every other secret whose underlying message seems to be "GD IT GUYS STOP HAVING FUN!!"

I've seen ficlet or flashfic.

Not commonplace enough in my experience. There are several fan communities I know of that are supposedly devoted to drabble-writing, but for some reason most of the contributions there never adhere to the rule.

I get the impression a lot of people seem to think that any short ficlet can be a drabble, which might explain why drabbles have been getting a bad rap.

Re: 149

[identity profile] pellnell.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I never even knew the official definition of a drabble. I just wrote short, one-scene fic that took about ten minutes to compose and labeled it a drabble.

I sort of feel bad for being ignorant now.

Wikipedia wouldn't lie to you :)

I've never gotten the hang of writing drabbles myself, so I've always cheated by writing groups of 100-word shorts that follow a unified theme. But yeah, it seems to me that what a lot of folks are calling drabbles these days are actually more like vignettes.

If it makes you feel any better, I'd still read it.
