Let's face it though, if they turned up here with British flag bag/socks/tie etc they'd be laughed at.

Also 153 OP - BRITISH not BRITTISH. God can no-one on F!S use spellcheck today?

You say that like it's a bad thing >:D

It gets a bit confusing in Hetalia fandom, because they seem to use England, Britain and UK interchangeably. I keep wanting to rant about it. By calling Arthur/England the UK, they are essentially saying that Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland are English... that may very well get them punched in the face over here.

Hahaha! Yeah, probably!

I think that's probably more a fault of the Japanese language, to be fair. The word for Britain is commonly used to mean 'England' rather than Britain (there are, actually, two words for Britain in this respect, with the second being rather uncommon, and the same is true with regards to the words for England).

I'm not interested in Hetalia, so I can't be certain. It's also likely that if you're reading it fan translated, the translators may well not know the difference.

It's because the Japanese word for your country translates out to 'England.' They never bothered to change it with the creation of the United Kingdom. So, all the countries DO call him England.

Granted, doesn't excuse people for not having a whit of common sense, especially concerning the REAL country and not a fandom character.

There are words that refer to Great Britain and the UK - 英国, グレートブリテン, 大ブリテン(島), so your statement isn't technically correct. However, the word for England - in this case, presumably イギリス - is often used interchangeably. There are alternatives, but they're not overly common. Like I said just above, if anon is reading translations, it's entirely possible that the translator is not entirely aware of the nuances involved between Britain and England - I have spoken to a lot of Americans (the subject hasn't really come up with other nationalities) who have been under the impression that Britain and England are one and the same, and who also do not realise that Britain ≠ UK.

Ah, my bad!

The one used in the comics is 'イギリス' and so the fandom probably chose the name closest to what that sounds like, England. Since America refers to him that was waaaay back when he was a colony, and then continues to refer to him that way in the present day strips.

That MIGHT be the logic behind calling him England versus UK.

Personally, I'm more fond of the human names.

[identity profile] momentarily.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
It happens! It's understandable, really, since if you're English, you're going to introduce yourself as イギリス人 and every Japanese person is going to think 'English', not 'British', yet the word also technically refers to Britain.

I... don't know |D UK/GB/names for that island floating in that sea get awfully confusing. From my own personal logic, I would take it to mean 'Great Britain' (particularly if it is in reference to colonisation - it wasn't 'the English Empire' - it was the 'British Empire' after all).

However, Scotland does exist as a character in himself already (he threw a shoe at England in one strip, haha), so I think the other countries of the UK are going to show up at one point as well. I really think that Arthur is just England and for some reason Hidekazu has him representing the entirety of the UK as well, even though the other countries have their own personalities.

153 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-12-16 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
It was made on purpose, it's not a mistake but an internal joke with a friend.
