I hate that about fandom. If you say you're republican or something like that, you either get lashed out at in anon or people who aren't anon will insist that you have to support your opinion otherwise they'll jump to the conclusion that you're uninformed because nobody in their right minds would think THAT way...

The best part is when they defriend you because of it.

Seriously you guys, politics isn't serious business. (I mean, it is, but not to the point where you're making it define who you are and who you want to talk to.) People are more than just red and blue, thanks.

Also, newsflash. Just because someone's got republican views doesn't mean that they don't think you have a point, too. That's something that always gets me. I've heard, "Wait. Did you just agree with me?" too many times. Yes, I did! I think you have a good opinion too!

Being right of the DNP is a huge rarity in fandom, I find. And saying so usually gets you a lot of "What?" and "How can you believe that?" reactions. It's really frustrating. Especially that anon thing. See the post above yours for some of the anon bullshit, like assuming being a Republican makes you racist.

Because it's not generally the liberals who freak out about immigrants and equal rights. It's not the liberals who want to bomb brown people in various countries. It's not the liberals want to prevent people from marrying their partner of choice. It's not liberals who support torture. It's not the liberals who support racial profiling. Actions speak louder than words.

You Republicans really are extreme in your beliefs. I live outside the US and the Republican party is the equivalent of the extreme right-wing nationalist parties over here. That's why I avoid people like you.

lol at assuming I'm a Republican. I have never been, and never will be a member of the Republican party. Nor am I member of the Democratic party, despite the fact that I voted for their candidate in the last election.

As for your points:

I oppose illegal immigration (big distinction there). My grandmother was an immigrant. I am half latino. To call me racist is absurd.

Depends on which country. Iraq was a bad idea and poorly managed from the start. Not enough forces were available, no plan was ready for the period after the war. Afghanistan, I believe, is justified as they were harboring the orchestrator of the 9/11 attacks.

I support doing what it takes to catch, stop and/or kill the bastards who blow themselves up and kill half a dozen innocent people in order to spread their terror and religious extremism.

Racial profiling is a very stick subject that has far, far more then two sides in it and I'm not going into it. Overall, I can't say I support it.

I support the right of people to marry who they choose and voted against proposition 8.

But I am a fiscal conservative, in favor of small government, in favor of 2nd Amendment rights, and against government interference in many aspects of peoples personal lives. I am not, and refuse to be lumped with, the people on the far left who have co-opted the word liberal. People who are just as dogmatic as the Neo-Cons who have unfortunately run the Republican party into the ground over the last eight years.

I am Liberal, with a capital L. I believe in personal responsibility, small government and the government staying the hell out of my personal business. I am a Liberal in the sense that is intended to be, not a liberal like the nanny-state supporters on the far-left, nor am I conservative like the quasi-fascist supporters of the New World Order.

And I'm sorry you choose to avoid "people like me." Whatever the hell that means. I like to think I'd get along well with other people, whatever their views may be.

Anyway, point being don't be so quick to stereotype and deride people who don't identify with the left and the DNP or what have you. For the most part we're normal people who just happen to have differing political views.

That turned out way tl;dr

THANK YOU. People like to make assumptions about my political views, also, just because I'm not leftist or "liberal" in the sense it's used today. I do, however, believe in classical liberalism - which is basically what you just defined as Liberal with a capital L. It's very refreshing to hear from someone with a similar (nearly identical from the sound of it, actually...) point of view.

Yeah, I've seen some of the same things about that, which boggles my mind since, while I'm a loyal Dem, one of my best RL friends is a total Republican. While this may bother us sometimes when we're in political debates, she's still an awesome person to hang around with.

I also have some Reps on my flist who are cool people. Someone's political party does not automatically tell you what the rest of their personality is. :/

tl;dr I agree :D

you're exactly right.

Um, actually, politics have a LOT to do with who I want to talk to on a regular basis. Why? Maybe because the right wing in general threatens my human rights (and the rights of many others), and I don't want to associate with people who support right-wing politics. Considering that I think that often equates to wishing me dead. GEE.

(And saying, "But I don't personally wish ANYONE dead, really!" doesn't cut it. If someone's belief system stems from and contributes to the societal mindset that [insert minority here] aren't really people worthy of equal treatment, I cannot respect support of those politics. They result in deaths.)

Socially liberal/fiscally conservative people I can possibly live with, even if we disagree on many points. At least they think I'm, you know, a human being.

Not socially liberal = no, I DON'T want to be BFFs, thanks.
