101. This secret is so incredibly cute and sweet, oh my god. ♥ Go you!

104. Because we think things and have opinions about fandom things we're all insane? What? What is even the point of this secret? ;;;;

108. D: D-don't worry so much, hon? In most corners of the Internet it's not like that. F!S is kind of like the cesspool of fandom -- not everyone here sucks, but a crapton of wank just sort of congregates here. I've barely ever had problems outside of communities like this one.

Feel better? *hugs*

111. I get the comic, and it's cute and funny in making its point, but I also think that if you're taking it too seriously, you're just a little paranoid yourself. Not everyone who wants a relationship to develop out of friendship first thinks that way. And that's pretty far from how all relationships that develop out of friendships work. For myself, I can be physically attracted to someone without knowing them, but there's no way I can be emotionally attracted to anyone I'm not already close to. I've tried it -- it fails. With me, I can't just take someone I know who I find cute and decide to date them, because that's not what love is to me -- I've had better relationships with people I started out friends with than I ever have the few times I tried dating someone I didn't know very well at all.

Long story short? In that case, that comic makes a great point and is funny, but it isn't true across the board. But then, my definition of love is weird, so you know. I may not be the best example here.

114. That guy -- the green one -- he looks like a character I'd love, oh shoot. *FINALLY GIVES IN AND LOOKS THIS SERIES UP*

117. I... have no idea why that would be a problem either. So I'm sorry but I don't know how to help you. Hang in there, though...? *not sure if this is the right response :x*

118. (http://community.livejournal.com/typochronicles/profile) or (http://community.livejournal.com/turnip_town/profile)? I know I'd love to play with you if you chose the latter. :3 They don't seem to be plot based at all, and they're not totally serious, and they seem like really happy places. Give it a try -- seriously, I'm sure quite a few places would love to have you, shy non-native speaker or not~

120. Wow, this secret is missing some key words. \O_o/

122. I- I KNOW FUCK THAT END. >O Escaflowne's ending was the cheatiest cheat to ever cheat its fans, man. I feel you.

125. I love all the characters because they seem so made of fail in very likeably human ways. Even though a great big chunk of it comes from their being countries. I DON'T KNOW IF THAT MAKES SENSE, BUT IT'S TRUE.

PS you're being judged.

128. Roooooseeeeeencraaaaantzzzz *A*

... yeah that's it. /totally unhelpful

130. I will never get the hate she has re: the whole. Jennifer Aniston thing. So yeah. BUT THEN, I'M MOSTLY OUT OF THE LOOP, SO.

132. I think this entirely depends on what your views are, how you represent them, and when you choose to represent them. If you're reasonable? I doubt you'll get much flak. But then, that said, you also can't pull the "BAW PEOPLE ARE BEING SO MEAN ARGUING WITH ME" card when people who disagree with you tell you why they disagree with you. If they're not doing it in a cruel way, then it needs to be sucked up. People need to stop entering debates if they don't want to be disagreed with.

... most of that wasn't even addressing you, OP. I'm just kind of "lolwhat" on the "GOD STOP ATTACKING ME" card I've seen people on both sides of the spectrum play a little too much when they're disagreed with. If you think before jumping in and use common sense while you're in there, you should be fine.

133. ... except for the fact that a good chunk of these are things the OPs would never feel comfortable saying, making them secrets. Good try, though.

140. This secret made me laugh a whole, whole lot. XD And yeah, evil and dead Stalin is evil and dead but was surprisingly hot when he was young. He could have been a freaking movie star -- in fact, I thought that was an actor before I read the secret. The universe is not fair. ;;

But the point of the comic wasn't because he wanted to be friends to her. He did all those things to win her over. It's the way he described his plan made it creepy in a way.

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohhhh yeah, definitely. And I totally agree with that, it's utterly creepy when people do things for those specific reasons. But I think I just missed all of the "people not getting it" trouble (I don't see xkcd in fandom a lot), so I was just kind of addressing it more cautiously, since it kind of (for joke purposes) presents it as a black and white, "she chooses the jerk over the 'friend' who is just manipulating her!"

The jerk is definitely more honest in that case, though. Nice Guys freak me the hell out. I just honestly don't know how fandom reads that comic, and I've heard people denounce the whole "friends before dating" thing before so I totally wasn't sure. >__>

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's a great way to know someone. My last relationship was with a guy I've been friends been four years beforehand, and now I don't think I can date a guy without knowing him as a friend first although it would be creepy if I meet a guy like in that secret. *shudder*.

Re: 111

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Ohhh yeah. I actually have a weird thing where it's like... if I don't know a girl at all I don't feel comfortable dating her, but if I'm friends with someone for too long, often she ends up in the "friend" category in my head and... I can't picture dating her. XD; GOD DAMMIT ME. I need to work on that one.

Still, hey, on that one, one of my BFFs is getting married to our mutual friend that we've known for YEARS, on Sunday. c: They're so cute together, trufax.

♥! I truly hope it does get less awkward soon.

You're missing the point of the secret. There were lots of people saying "Oh, that's me!" and "Oh, that's my life!" about a comic that is entirely about a guy being friends with a woman specifically to manipulate her into being in a relationship.

If you think the comic is abut someone who wants his relationships to grow organically out of his friendships, then you're missing the point of the comic. And missing that point says something about your (general "you", not you in particular) experience and conceptions of friendships.

Re: 111 OP

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, see, I hoped that was the point -- it seemed like it would be, but I don't actually see anything in fandom about xkcd so I actually hadn't seen any of the reactions to it. It is kind of creepy that the point goes over way too many people's heads like that.

Yeah, I get that, really -- I'm just tired and went off on a tangent because I have actually had people tell me they find it too creepy to ever date anyone they're friends with. XD So I tl;dr'd pointlessly on that one. XD; The comic itself is completely not about that -- and yeah, the Nice Guy syndrome is one I've had brushes with a couple of times, and it. Just. Noooo.

At least "this jerk" in that comic is honest. :|b

Aaand to edit because I was apparently brain dead when I read/responded to that secret:

By "I also think that if you're taking it too seriously, you're just a little paranoid yourself," I was mostly worried that people might not get it on BOTH sides of the spectrum. That Nice Guy in the comic is so fucking creepy it's not even funny, but I've had too many people say how creepy it is to EVER date someone you were friends with (and I have no idea whaaaaat is up with that or how I run into the minority that seem to think that B|), that I was a little worried that people would misread the comic as being, "Look, this is what 'friends' who eventually ask you out are REALLY like!" I know neither that nor sympathising with the Nice Guy are the point of the comic at all, but personally I've met fewer people who'd sympathise with the Nice Guy than I have those who'd use this as an example of what happens when friends date.

BUT YEAH, FOR THE MOST PART, I JUST FAIL. I was less addressing the secret than I was some hypothetical alternate response to the original comment that apparently never happened. Sorry about that :|;;;

It's called shamelessly pursuing another woman's husband.

Re: 130

[identity profile] toppedbywalls.livejournal.com 2008-12-16 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but I keep getting the impression that people hate her for "omg breaking Jen and Brad up!" and that they don't hate Brad just as much. I know that's prooobably not the case across the board, but. Please tell me that a lot of the Angelina haters also hate Brad just as much? Because he would have been just as much at fault in all of that.

I didn't *hate* it, but I certainly didn't love it. The anime whose ending made me WTF the most was Kare Kano. The series was so awesome up until the last few episodes, then Hideaki Anno decided to screw with the fans.

They both seem to be great RPs, and to be honest I'm already thinking about which characters I could play there. Thanks a bunch!
