Um, no. Please don't try to put words in my mouth. :(

A drabble is exactly 100 words. Period. A helluva lot of 'drabbles' posted these days are just short fics, yet still labeled as drabbles when they're not.

If any story is written well, there's still literary value, whether there's 100 words, 326 words, or 56,000 words.

My statement wasn't an attack on people who write short fics or ficbits. It was actually just my irritation with the influx of badfic that's invaded LJ lately. Yanno - 600 words with no periods, commas, and a misspelling every other word. I don't think absolutely every story needs a beta reader, but I do wish people would at least put an effort into their creations.

I'm sorry, I honestly wasn't trying to put words in your mouth. I really did read that as "drabbles are creative challenges, trying to fit them at exacftly 100 words, and if it isn't exactly 100 words it's doing it wrong and therefore exactly the fail you're describing."

I can totally see being annoyed with all the badfic, though. I actually think I like the badfic "drabbles" way better than the multichaptered badfics, though, if only because it doesn't keep getting updated and updated and updatedksagjflkajgfsf.

Again, sorry -- I just kind of took your comment at face value after the amount of people agreeing with the idea of "omg yes anything that isn't fleshed out is just for lazy people who can't write anything longer." I truly didn't mean to.

WORD. Especially when they're updated a few times in a DAY. Dude, this isn't live-action writing! We don't all need to see every time there's a new paragraph! D:

"Drabble", in the sense that we are using it, is not in the dictionary. It has no set definition, cannot be confirmed to mean one specific thing but not another related thing, and is thus free to be used for pieces of writing that are not all identical in nature or intent. Period. :)

Right. I say 'effing' a lot. That's not in the dictionary, either.

I choose to interpret 'drabble' to mean what it was meant to mean. It's never meant anything else, no matter how many people just have a lack of understanding of it.

Basically if you do some basic literary research, you'll see that it's already been defined and it really doesn't need redefined.

A drabble is a short fic that is composed with exactly 100 words. As inaccurate as Wikipedia can sometimes be, the wiki entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drabble) is actually pretty spot on for this one.
