he'd rather stick with the ship than with his crew

Well, you kinda have to consider at the time, in a highly emotionally overwrought moment, he basically thought he was doing the others a favour by leaving. That was at least half of the reason: that he felt horribly ashamed over having been robbed of the money they'd all fought for and needed, and he felt he was nothing more than a burden to the rest and he'd only screw up things again if he stuck around. Which was overreacting and factually incorrect, but it wasn't like anyone was telling him otherwise.

The other half was because of his inability to accept Merry's decrepit condition, claiming she could too keep sailing (wrongheaded and incorrect), a denial fuelled by Usopp's intuitive sense that Merry was more than just a normal ship, that she had something akin to a soul or spirit (correct, but he should at least have tried to share his intuition with the others).

I think the whole thing was very regrettable but also very easy to understand, on both sides (I understand Luffy's overreactions too). I think Kiwi and Moz summed it up in the best way: "Men are clumsy and stupid!"

As for Sogeking, I think that was a pretty creative way of dealing with a tricky situation: Usopp was right in that it would have been awkward for him to fight alongside the others as if nothing had happened, and personally I think they didn't really have time for a big reconciliation thing right then when they needed to focus all their energy on saving Robin. I'm willing to accept I may be wrong on that point, though. In any case, Usopp did put the mask away when he needed too in order to save Luffy.
