(Final Fantasy XIV)

I don't think Maxima is particularly compelling (except for maybe how quickly he was like "my empire is trying to kill me, this totally tracks, I'm gonna defect!", which is only a maybe because I'm sure anyone would take the first legit opportunity to book it after having to work for Asahi) but he's definitely more likable than Gaius "daughterfucker" Baelsar. He's kind of a shit. I don't think he's trying to bring civilization to the savages anymore, which is prob the only good thing I can say about him? Gaius "some war crimes, but not others" Baelsar.

Maxima is more interesting to me because he's proof the empire CAN actually produce good people with good morals who didn't need their dad to get involved with calling down a fucking moon to see it.

I don't like how the plot of the Weapons seems to be trying to sweep the stuff with Gaius under the rug and make him a better person than he was. Especially because it's being done in a way that makes no sense and we can still all see the old ARR stuff!

ROFL, I want to be a fly on the wall when you get to the end of MSQ just to see your reaction. Wait till you see what they did with Elidibus...

Okay, fascist-lover. Keep sucking fascist dick. Oh, but it's only okay if they're HAWT.

Christ, what is with Emet-Selch stans willing to excuse every little thing he does because he's remotely attractive and a sad white boy? And then extending it to the fascist who only joined our side because HE got dicked over by Ascians? Sorry I don't feel sad for the omnicidal psychopaths who don't give a fuck about anyone but themselves.

I know, right? Give us more Maxima content, Yoshi-P ;_;

(Anonymous) 2020-08-14 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Less "boo hoo the fascist is reaping what he sowed, feel bad for him while we sweep the entire Livia thing under the rug", more Maxima!!!!

god who tf cares this much about livia? she was a mass-murdering psycho that fully got off on torturing her victims, she's garbage and i frankly don't care if gaius put his dick in her or not (which is not as clear-cut as you're pretending it is). i don't care about ~sad backstories~ and ~trauma~, it's the literal definition of "cool motive, still murder." fuck livia.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-14 10:31 am (UTC)(link)
That bitch killed entirely too many of the Scions, the WoL killing her ass was well deserved, fuck this feeling sorry for Livia.

And you know, the localizers are often free to do whatever they want with the text so long as the general story comes across. I would not be surprised if the 'my quarters, one hour' was an example of Spice Up the Subtitles, given they've done that before.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-14 11:14 am (UTC)(link)
I feel sorry for Livia because she's clearly that way entirely because of Gaius. But oh noes, she's a womenz, can't feel sorry for that. But no, we can cry over Fascist McDickface who only started caring once he got fucked over by Ascians. And even then he still wanted to unite everyone under Garlean rule, it just takes a back seat to Ascians!

Christ, this fandom's so stupidly shallow. Willing to excuse a fascist Nazi analogue so long as he's attractive, willing to excuse every one of his actions because oh noes he feels SAD now, but heaven fucking forbid people point out that he fucked his own damn daughter and is the REASON she's a fucking psychopath (it's like he ENCOURAGED it because it got him what he wanted). He gave the order that killed so many Scions. But you don't see him catching any heat for it.

Not saying killing her was bad, just that I'm sick of Gaius getting off scot-free because fandom wants to suck his fascist dick.

He was a mass-murdering psychopath fascist, too, who reads like a white supremacist wanting to ~tame the savages~. Yet here you are, sobbing over his backstory, and boo hoo we're killing his kids (who deserved better than Gaius the Fascist).

Gaius was a daughterfucker. Get over it. There is no other way to read someone asking another person to their fucking quarters. What were they gonna do, discuss policy? Then why not an office? Why explicitly his chambers?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-14 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh look, it's the nonny from the other week. We got to kill another of Gaius's kids this patch, the green-haired one. I'm sure you were fucking ecstatic if you actually play the game~

(Anonymous) 2020-08-14 11:08 am (UTC)(link)
Not the same anon, you're fucking obsessed.

Gaius won't fuck you, dude, though, given your other responses.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-14 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey Gaius-stan, I see you there. I'm here to explain a few things. Like why people don't like Gaius! And why people have harsh criticisms of the WEAPON storyline!

See, there's an NPC I want to introduce you to. You've met him, actually. His name is Glaumunt. He's an NPC you run into in 2.0. At one point, he reveals something fun. Which is, his reason for helping you break into the castrum to rescue your friends. Why he hates Garlemald.

You see, he, his mother and his sister were put into a work camp in Ala Mhigo. You know, the place Gaius van Baelsar was in charge of when Glaumunt was a boy. Here's his own words on the matter: " We were poor folk livin' simple lives, but we knew happiness just the same.
An' then the imperials came an' took it all away. When Ala Mhigo fell, they put my family in a camp. Bein' a lad, I was made to do hard labor, while my mother an' sister were forced to do far worse... They hid their sufferin' from me as best they could, but I knew, an' the thought of it drove me mad."

They attempted an escape, and got caught. but rather than be raped day in and out again, his mother and sister threw themselves to their deaths.

Then there's Arenvald. His mother was raped by an imperial soldier under Gaius' command. Arenvald is the result, and his mother spent the rest of their time living together terrified her son would grow a third eye.

We run into a few of the towns in Ala Mhigo, and most of them aren't cowed because of Zenos--but because of Gaius. Because Gaius took part in forced conscription, because he took part in suppressing all culture, he took part in tearing down their sense of self. Because they weren't, in his eyes, worthy of that. Because they're just savages.

There's the case of Fordola, who lost her father because of Ala Mhigans not tolerating loyalists to people raping them and tearing down their culture. Was it fucked up? Sure. But let's be real--Fordola was treated as a second-class citizen by her fucking beloved Garlemald, including by Gaius.

And yes, there's Livia and Lucia. Lucia even outright says she wasn't taken in by Gaius because she wasn't useful.

So then comes the Shadowhunter. And suddenly, all of that in the WEAPON questline is ignored and swept under the rug. All the fascism, all the work camps, all the forced conscription, all the erasing culture, all of it. Because Gaius feels sad over a bunch of kids he took in because of their use to him. All of the black to him is suddenly erased so we get a much more cleaned up Gaius who is sad and sorry for things coming back to bite him. Which is 100% on the writers here!

These kids you go on about, the kids that people like me must be sooooo happy are dying? I'm pissed they exist. Because they only exist to give Gaius manpain. And since I'm in my 30s, I'm so, so tired of characters existing to give a man some manpain instead of an actual character arc with real growth. Because growth is not what he has. The only growth he has is, "I'm going to kill Ascians because one fucked me over. Otherwise Empire's fine!"

It's not. He can't have been ignorant to the comfort women, the rape, etc. He definitely knew about the forced conscription. He 100% knew about non-Garleans being treated like absolute shit. But it's also not a coincidence that Gaius surrounded himself by people he could manipulate. Rhitatyn was fiercely loyal. Gaius doesn't even spare him much of a thought when he dies. Nero wanted to be recognized. Gaius took advantage of that because Nero could replace Cid, who is who Gaius really wanted working for him. Livia. Livia doesn't need much saying, but he raised her. He raised her. And look how she turned out. He is not a blind or stupid man. She wasn't subtle. He 100% knew she had the hots for him, and he used it. Because it ensured she was loyal and he could get her to do whatever he wanted.

And now, suddenly, I'm supposed to believe that he's not that person? A good redemption arc requires he recognize his sins--all of them--and he actually grow from them. He hasn't done this yet. And given the way things are going, it's not going to. So sorry, but I'm never going to be interested in his arc. Because it's never going to address all of those things above. It's already sweeping it under the rug--and that is on the writers. And boy am I not happy with them.
