Now that I think about it, all my het ships are from ancient fandoms back when fan writers skewed older. I don’t think I would ship Spike/Buffy if I watched the show now, but the fics keep me coming back. Great stories still being written as recently as a few years ago!

BTVS back in the day had some fantastic M/F and F/F stories! I wish I'd saved more of my faves to read again.

The reason for this, IMO, is that Buffy/Spike and Mulder/Scully had amazing will they/won't they vibes, and a fair amount of M/F canon pairings do actually get together.

Sherlock/Joan has good stuff because it's unlikely (I didn't watch the whole series and don't know if it's still on.)

So I think that dynamic that goes on for many seasons actually leads to better and more fic, since people write stuff to fix what's not happening in canon. Just my theory.
