IT depends for me. Some universes have movies, books, comics, tv shows, video games etc that some people either don't have time for, can't spend all their money on or simply have no interest in. That's fine.
I love Star Wars, but I'll never play the games or read most of th comics and might even skip some books. I also don't talk about these things like I know them.

What I don't get is people getting the easiest things wrong forever after they started being in fandom like (not all that complicated) character names. How?
