TBH, there are many wildly different ways of being a fan & engaging in geekishness, and they don't all go together neatly. It's good to recognize this - I think the assumption that all kinds of geeks should fit together harmoniously is literally one of the classical Geek Social Fallacies - and it would be good to have ways to more neatly organize geek social circles based on different methods of approaching this stuff.

The problem with gatekeeping is where it becomes about putting one kind of fandom on a pedestal as The One True Geekishness. Or when it becomes a tool for people to be shitheads to other people, obviously.

This. People who don't engage as deeply aren't doing anything wrong, they're just doing it differently.
