IMO, MDZS/The Untamed is without a doubt canon romance. The novel was more explicit, but the TV adaptation did as much as it could (to the point of adding MORE clues than the novel) to get that across and still maintain plausible deniability for the censors. Anyone who calls it queer baiting doesn't understand what that term actually means.
