Sorry, OP. I don’t find Austen’s books difficult, but I do think they’re boring and not very funny. I got an anthology of her novels for Christmas and I’ve been reading them during quarantine, but the only one I kinda like is Northanger Abbey.

Look, there's nothing wrong with thinking that, and there's nothing wrong with just wanting to talk about your general opinion of Jane Austen, that's what this website is for.

But I have to ask - do you really think that what OP said was that they had a problem with people disliking Austen? It seems to me that OP is talking about people being unable to understand Austen, not about whether people like Austen or whether people find Austen boring or whatever other reactions to Austen people have. And it seems like most of the other early replies to the thread have been along the same lines - people just wanting to share their opinions about Austen. Which isn't a bad thing! It just feels like a disconnect.

nayrt - Pretty typical for FS, in my experience. If there's anything even remotely debatable, a significant percentage of the responses will be about something that's perhaps tangential to the secret, but not actually addressing what the OP said. And a small percentage will be so off base, you'll question whether or not they're responding to the right secret.

Given that OP's concern - as clearly stated in the last sentence - is when people are "not understanding what's being said", it seems pretty reasonable to think that OP's point about humor is that people miss the basic fact that Austen's books are meant to be funny, that people don't understand what's going on in a literary sense.

I mean, that's entirely your own interpretation and you're doing it in such bad faith that I don't even know what to tell you.
The main issue here is that you yourself look down on an entire genre so much that the merest hint of connection to that genre means, in your eyes, that someone patronises or dismisses an author writing in that genre. I think you should probably examine your own sexist prejudices for that genre and why you loathe it so much.

Nope, your assumptions are all wrong. And there is DEFINITELY a tone people are using with the connections they're making. Have you been hiding under a rock? People have been shitting on chick flicks forever. Austen's work doesn't come under that umbrella, but it's clear people are using those negative connections to dismiss her achievements.
