That how I figure it too. It was particularly annoying in the Newsies fandom, where everyone paired together the films love interest with the musicals love interest. They literally do not exist in the same continuum, and it's only (imo, but like really) so they can ship the main character with the other main dude. Then again the self awareness of a lot of the people in that fandom was like, zero, so there was that. Didn't make all the 'NEWSBIANS', 'THEY LOVE EACH OTHER', 'BLAH BLAH BLAH ETC', tags any less annoying though.
