I dislike it if there's absolutely nothing in canon to indicate that the two characters might be interested in each other, because then it feels like the author thinks that the only way people can be happy is if they're in a relationship.

If the characters actually have chemistry, cool. Otherwise, no thanks.

I love Lord of the Rings but there was zero chemistry between Eowyn and Faramir (her crush on Aragorn made perfect sense) so it looked like either a political marriage or she settled for him.

I agree in the movies, but in the books I love them and think they are actually better than Aragorn and Arwen. I love their bonding in the House of Healing.
