I certainly can't speak for all schools, but I was definitely surprised when my friend's high school age son told me that his junior year AP English class didn't read whole books, just short passages. I was like, "...how?" Not too surprised that he got straight As in the class but only managed a 2 on the AP exam itself. Education in the south is fun.

There's honestly a lot of that now. Teaching to the test means that actual content needs to be stripped out.
