This is so well put!

Also, a lot of people might say of a book, "I found it hard to get through," as a way of explaining why they didn't like or finish it. That doesn't necessarily mean they literally found it difficult to follow. It probably means they didn't find it engaging.
I find this true even within Austen. I adore Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, but when I was reading Emma it honestly felt like a chore because it just didn't engage me the same way and I didn't care about the characters the same way.

Reading level does affect people's ability to enjoy books, but it's far from the only factor at play, and to imply that people aren't literate or clever enough to "get" Austen is a liiittle bit elitist imo.
