Honestly, I think a lot of that comes down to how good your English teacher was. I had to read a lot of novels that I think were boring and devoid of literary merit (I came of age in a time where we promoted The National Literature above all else—and I did not grow up in a country with great national literature for the most part), but a good English teacher could still make it interesting. The difference is whether it felt forced or not. I don't think I'd have enjoyed reading The Hunger Games in an English class if it was forced on me any more than I enjoyed reading the endless barrage of "I grew up on the prairies and my life is farmwork, incest, and endless misery."
