Also, a lot of people might say of a book, "I found it hard to get through," as a way of explaining why they didn't like or finish it. That doesn't necessarily mean they literally found it difficult to follow. It probably means they didn't find it engaging.

This, plus a lot of people were assigned Austen in school and for some people the fact that they have to read something for a grade does make it more difficult. When I was in high school I would've told you I liked Jane Eyre and hated Persuasion, because I picked up the former on my own and read it for fun.
