This always bothered me. Though I've probably seen more getting canon love interest out of the way by shipping her with the next character in line of whoever she interacts with.

One of my favorite ships could be considered a "pair the spares" and it really sucks the fun out of fandom.

The ship I'm talking about is Zack/Aerith. It has always been my FF OTP but it's never been super popular. After the remake it got a boost in relevance but most of the attention is just from Cloud/Tifa shippers trying to get Aerith out of the way and they have no real investment in the Zack/Aerith ship itself. In fact when I look at their accounts of people writing ship meta and posting .gifs they are just shitting on Aerith outside and only pretend to like her when paired with Zack.

Another example is Orihime getting pushed with Ishida to get her out of the way for fandom juggernaut IchiRuki. I used to think Ishida/Orihime was cute, but now it's been ruined by bitter shippers who 100% hate Orihime's guts and only pretend to like her when paired with Ishida or Ulquiorra.

So as someone who genuinely enjoys some of those "pair the spares" ships, it really fucking sucks that it seems the majority is just people who hate the female characters guts when she doesn't end up conveniently paired off outside their preferred ship.
