I dunno OP they might hate the fic so much that going to look at it is a chore.

I know thats the case for many of my fic's but I wound up deleting them.

I assume it's abandoned in such a scenario

oh that's been me as a writer before ahaha i'm sorry op. and i mean i get why it's frustrating. but any time there is a long ass break between updates, for me personally, i rarely can anticipate it. life just happens and fandom hobbies get away from me before i know it. so even if i absolutely intend to finish a fic, it's not on my brain enough to be getting it done amidst work and other obligations, that i'd probably would also forget to write a short note to readers even if i'd thought to do that before smh

This is why I never post anything that isn't done.

And why I don't read things that aren't done.

I know that things get away from people and that's fair, but I don't need to make it my problem. Heh.

Sometimes as an author it's hard to realise just how long you've left a fic un-updated for, if life has got in the way, so I totally understand writers not putting notes on fics that they are planning to continue but are running short on time/energy to work on. It's not on the "years" timescale, but I once accidentally left a fic 6 months between updates because I was just sideswiped and by the time i had a chance to work on it and update I suddenly realised just how long it had been. It wasn't a good feeling.

I do agree that it would be better if more *actually abandoned* fics had author's notes on them, though, but i can understand why people don't do that, whether it's about not wanting to admit defeat or just not wanting to look at that particular fic again for whatever reason.

Guess what! 90% of the time, the author would *also* love to know if this is abandoned or if they'll be able to finish it someday.

This though. I have one WIP I continued and finished after 1.5 years of a break, not feeling the motivation to write any more for it during said break. And then one day the motivation returned practically from one moment to another, and I was able to write an ending I actually felt content with.

I have two other WIPs in similiar situations. Not updated since more than a year, but definitely having plans to continue writing them.

But, you know. Sometimes life tends to get in the way of doing a hobby. So I can't really say I feel guilty for not having updated them since a while. Eventually the right mood and inspiration will return.

Amen to this.

My oldest unfinished fic hasn't been updated in over 15 years.

But about every five years or so, I write a chapter because I at least have an idea of how I want to end it. But I don't want to keep getting people excited about an update so far apart.

So I'll be posting the rest all at once when I actually have a rough draft complete. Like I do for my current fics (not post until at least a rough draft is complete).

But as to when that will happen? Might be another 15 years at this rate.

I must admit that I’m guilty of this. That’s why I no longer post fics until they’re done.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-19 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, as a reader I almost prefer for them to leave it open. Like even if I technically know they've given up on it, I like to trick myself to have that little bit of hope that they'll come back to it.

Basically, ignorance is bliss for me.

Authors owe you nothing.

If it bothers you so much, stop reading uncompleted fics.

People are allowed to feel how they feel. And Fandom Secrets is an appropriate place to express something like this.

I agree, but the secret maker literally acknowledged this in the top line. They don't at all come off entitled to me and this comment send needlessly brusque.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-19 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
They might be dealing with major shit, of course - or even dead.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-19 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well this isn't depressing at all, is it.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-21 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
This has happened to me three times- the dead part, that is. Feels extremely bad man.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-19 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Guilty as charged.

I usually leave a note on my profile (on hiatus), but I never do so on my fic, frankly because when I download fics I kind of get annoyed when the AN are present and interrupt the flow of what I'm reading. Also for posterity. If and when I return to writing that story, in the updated AN I will write I'm back! Sorry I was gone for so long, but here you go -- thanks for your patience.

Because I know if a fix I was reading didn't get updated in years, I generally forget about it/never finish it. So I hold no hard feelings against the readers. Sometimes you just lose interest.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-19 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I just updated a story after five months, so it happens.

People thought I died, apparently. No, I just got caught up in revising it as slow as fuck. Sorry, readers.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-19 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I'm having some severe anxiety right now where an author who updates their story sporadically, like they take months in between updates as a norm. It's become really popular and they get a lot of comments asking 'updatz plz??!!?' and in one response they said that they'd stopped writing it, (or something along that line) in what seemed like a joking response.
It was only the one time, and I can't tell how much of it was me wanting it to be a joke and how much of it was them just saying so since I haven't seen any other mention of it aside from that one reply. I'm way too afraid to ask, so I'm just checking back every week hoping for the best at this point;;

I hope they didn't give up on it, but it's all I can do to just hope I guess...
