Old man? I watched the whole thing and none of his characters struck me as old

That might be influenced by how many of the actors were genuinely near death, though

(This is not a "therefore watch it" comment, just having one of those "perceptions really do vary, huh" moments)

(Anonymous) 2020-08-20 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, not an old man necessarily. Just older.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-19 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally get this. No matter how much I love a character for who they are, there’s a big part of me that only wants to remember them in their prime, strong and beautiful and with more left ahead of them than behind them.

I guess I haven’t made much peace with mortality and the aging process. *shrugs*

I watched season three and you've made a smart choice, OP. Not just because of Cooper. It was seriously WTF even by Lynch standards

(Anonymous) 2020-08-19 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of Internet people I know really, really loved that part of s3, they really wanted all the Lynchian weirdness at full blast

For me, what I always loved about Twin Peaks was that it, you know, stapled all of that weirdness and genius shit to a format that was heavily grounded in television, that drew hugely from the structure of television especially genre TV. So I never really got around to watching S3.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-19 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm with you. I enjoy the weirdness, but I prefer it as a piquant condiment to a coherent plot.

It was seriously WTF even by Lynch standards

LMAO you're not wrong

I enjoyed it more the second time around. But yeah WTF.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-19 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Wise choice. I will never, for as long as I live, be able to get the imagery of Naomi Watts riding a naked Kyle MacLachlan like a stolen horse, his arms flopping up and down like a rag doll. Why, David Lynch, whhhhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyy...

(Anonymous) 2020-08-19 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha that scene was crazy. But I also found it oddly sentimental? They were both so clearly into it, and the buildup was great, with his wife suddenly seeing him through that new lens and being completely overwhelmed by it.

S3 was wildly brilliant, but if your ageism is so intense that you can't look at people who got old then you're making the right choice to not watch. Gotta know your triggers.

/massive eyeroll

(Anonymous) 2020-08-19 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Not people, just Cooper.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-19 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
*eyeroll*

You really can't help yourself can you? You have to make it into something it's not.

Oh look, someone made a secret about people like you...

NAYRT - Are you kidding? Did you reply to the wrong person by mistake? AYRT is perfectly chill. The anon who started the thread, otoh, could definitely stand to chill.

Maybe it's because I'm old now, but he didn't strike me as being that old even though he's quite a bit older than me. Also, Agent Cooper isn't really himself for most of the show. I can't say more without spoiling it, but the show isn't what you think it is. It's far from perfect, but it's wonderful. Just like the original seasons.

Count me down as a fellow fan. Atmospheric whooshing and all.

And Laura Dern. Oh my.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-19 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Well also, he's not Dale Cooper in season 3 until like the next to last episode.

Doppelganger!Dale, on the other hand. Woof. He could be ninety, and I'd be creaming my panties.

(Anonymous) 2020-08-20 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
He was indeed beautiful sigh...and I loved Dale Cooper
I haven't seen the new series and have heard mixed things about it. One friend hated it, one friend loved it. I will see it but I suspect I won't like it.
I remember when X-Files had its revival and though I went with Mulder and Skully looking older (cos obviously) a part of me still wanted to see them at their prime. I realise it's because I want the show at it's prime. I'm more than happy to see Gillian Anderson and David Duchovney in stuff now (Gillian Anderson was wonderful in Hannibal) but I see X Files as an encapsulation of a specific period of time. It fit that time (the 90s) and didn't need the revival, imo.
I feel the exact same way about Twin Peaks. Yes, I love Kyle and will see him in any good film or tv series. But I want Dale Cooper, and Sheriff Truman and Audrey Horne and all the other wonderful characters to stay where they were- in the early 90s.

Gosh, he is beautiful isn't he? Took me a while to scroll past there. He’s still incredibly handsome now to my mind.

I get where you're coming from though op. I get the same thing with the Whose Line is it Anyway cast.

You're not missing much

I love Twin Peaks. The music haunted me for years. I was a kid and it came on right at bedtime, so I'd hear it when saying good night to my parents. We also lived about 30 miles from where it was filmed and I've been to the hotel by the falls many times.

Season Three was interesting, and really, really weird, but added nothing to the show. It answered nothing. It was just kinda there. I'm glad I saw it, but what there is of it should've been about 3 episodes, then get around to wrapping up the plot and answering questions. Imagine if, in LotR, instead of going from Helm's Deep to Minas Tirith, Gandalf and everyone decided to tour a modern art museum with a bunch of random new characters, then Sam stabbed Gollum, then the credits rolled. That was essentially Season Three.

That's one weird ass coffee cup
