******MAJOR SPOILER ALERT AHEAD********************

I was thinking about making a secret about this because my take seems different than what the show implies, but I'd say he's far more honorable than Phoenix, but is corrupted and goes to the Dark Side at some point. The possession is not so much the cause as it is one of the many results of his corruption. See, Runyu is the oldest son of the Heavenly Emperor, but he's a bastard and the Empress (his adopted mother, but it's complicated) despises him because she thinks he's plotting to steal the throne from her son, Phoenix - clearly the golden child and renowned warrior, beloved of his parents, etc. Runyu and Phoenix are good friends initially, and Runyu spends his whole life trying not to offend anyone, never having any ambitions and basically being this harmless, isolated guy who is the Night God, the god who orders the stars in the sky.

But. Part way through he finds out that his birth mother (whose identity was unknown to him) is plotting to overthrow the Heavenly Court in revenge for being seduced and discarded by the Heavenly Emperor, and that her home was burned by the vengeful Empress and her son stolen and given a magic pill to supress his memories of childhood. So when he finds out, the Empress (who thought Runyu's mother died in the fire) tries to kill Runyu's mother, and she dies in Runyu's arms and it breaks his heart. It's at THAT point that he decides to slowly, quietly fight back and revenge his dead mother, and he uses his quiet intelligence to conspire against the Heavenly Emperor and Empress and rise to power. Meanwhile, his fianceé (the female lead) he's been engaged to for years (an arranged marriage) has fallen in love with his half-brother Phoenix. Runyu is deeply in love with her, but she only likes him as a friend.

There's... a lot going on. More than what I've typed, but that's typical for Cdramas, IME. Ashes of Love drags in parts, but I really loved Runyu so much.

DA - Also spoilery

He does pull back from full Dark Side. This scene is part of him putting as much right as he can. And while I wouldn't say he's ~happy~ at the end, there's, you know, peace between the main characters.

ayrt - Yes, and I really loved that... because I'd mourned that he went to the Dark Side at all, though it was a fascinating and partly justified journey, IMO. But I love that he came back and if it wasn't exactly like he was, he was working to be a good, gentle person again.
