A couple times, someone has commented on my fic that someone should write Ship X instead of Ship Z, and I love getting to reply, “Yes, that would be nice, wouldn’t it? Someone should totally do that. :) :) :)”

Hahahaha, I am totally doing this in future.

I once got a comment like that on a piece of art for a rarepair I draw often. The commenter complained that their preferred rarepair doesn't get enough art. I never responded, but privately I was like "So maybe start drawing."

Hahaha, gold!

Oh man, back when I wrote fic this happened to me a lot because I predominantly wrote one couple that was not THE couple. So there were always comments about, "How about A/B instead of A/C??"

I snapped at some point and started one fic with a disclaimer of something like, "There is no A/B here, there will be no A/B here, if you're looking for A/B, go elsewhere."

It was literally the most popular pairing, they could have gone anywhere else for it!!

Leave me to my niche ship!

It's not even criticism, they're stating a preference. People should learn to read the tags and leave you alone - or write their own stories, as you suggested.

I find comments like this bizarre in the extreme. I've never gotten one like it, and honestly just cannot imagine what would go through someone's mind that they think that's remotely appropriate.

Just...wtf.

I once came across a comment -on someone else's fic - that was about 20 words of praise for the fic, 450 words of outlining a fic they really super totally would love to read, then wrapped up with 20 words of sighing about whether anyone would ever write it. I almost had to admire the sheer bald-faced cheek of it!

I only write het and I have got several comments from people who really like my writing, but could I write slash instead?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-22 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
When I was a noob I did things like this - once or twice. Then I pulled my socks up and started writing myself - and realised that it's not as easy as it looks. Because it does look easy when you can't see all the hard work.

400k of fiction later, I'm gradually getting the hang of it, and I wince at those couple of silly comments I made. Live and learn.

I'd badly want to tell the person who left that comment to fuck right off but then I'd sigh realizing it's probably just a child who hasn't learned social skills yet and I'd quietly delete their comment instead. I wish it was easier to block people on fanfic sites.

I get comments from people who don't like that I made a character bi who is a lesbian in canon. I get why that could be annoying to people, but like... don't read my fic then??? It's tagged for a reason, yo. And my favorite one was someone complaining that there are enough het ships out there so why would I add another one that's not even canon. Uh... because it's what I'm inspired to write?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-23 01:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I agree - this can be quite annoying. A related kind of comment that I get occasionally is when people say "this isn't a couple/show/movie I'm interested in or like but I read it anyway."

Why the hell are you even reading the story if you don't like the source? And if you want to tell me you enjoyed it, just tell me that without any caveats! It comes across as weirdly insulting, like they have to judge the characters and stories I like instead of just ignoring the names and fapping to the porn or whatever.

This person did that to me FOR YEARS "hey, this should happen next. This happened in canon, so you might want to look into it. Hey, this real life thing could affect things in your story, you'll probably want to avoid it" etc etc. Like I haven't written for the better part of 20 years and can't figure things out for myself. Then I tried blocking them but they came back as a guest account and continued on still trying to tell me what to do. Ughhh.

I've gotten this one before and it's just...so bizarre and mildly offensive. Just...why? If I had wanted to characterize this character like the commenter said to, I would have done that, and written the story as a comedy instead of the semi-dark friendship/found family story they just read. Because that's how the story would have gone if I characterized the guy like they wanted.

Like do people actually think these things through or what.
